Sean Avery Comes Out of the Vogue Closet
Professional hockey player Sean Avery has no problem being in the closeta fashion closet, that is.
And just because the hunky New York Rangers left wing may be able to tell the difference between a Jimmy Choo and a Manolo Blahnik, it doesn’t mean he’s gay. In fact, you best not even think of poking fun at him for his obession with fashion.
Avery explains it all in a piece he just posted on MensVogue.com about his recent internship at Vogue.
What?
Yes, Avery interned at Vogue!
So why on earth did a professional hockey player write a letter to Vogue editrix Anna Wintour asking for an internship?
“I like clothes,” Avery writes. “Always have. What started innocently enough with my first tie-dyed Chip & Pepper shirt at age 12 has evolved over a decade and a half into a closet full of Dries Van Noten, YSL, Dior, and Costume National, to name just a few.”
Avery, 28, goes on to say he prefers the Style section of the New York Times over the sports pages and that he thinks “women’s clothes are especially interestingthere are so many options, and they can tell more of a story.”
He waxes on about picking clothes for photo shoots. Of one he writes, “Try to spot the leopard-print Alexander McQueen vest that pulled the outfit together.”
Avery admits some question whether he’s straight, so he makes a pointwell, a few pointsto show how he’s so not gay. He recalls being distracted by “some of the best-looking and best-dressed women in New York” when he had his first lunch in the company cafeteria.
The best, however, has to be his parting words. He dares anyone to tease him about his obsession with fashion.
“Go right ahead,” he writes. “Just know that you may get your ass kicked by a very expensive pair of shoesand that they’ll probably match both my belt and my shirt.”
In other words: Sean’s here, he’s not queer, so ya better get used to it.
Rachel Bilson Gets Her Shopping Fix
Rachel Bilson Gets Her Shopping Fix
Getting a much-needed shopping fix, Rachel Bilson was spotted in the Meatpacking district of New York City on Tuesday morning (June 17).
Accompanied by a guy pal, the former OC babe combed the racks at shops including Alexander McQueen, Butik and Jeffery before taking a break for a bite to eat.
In related news, Rachel’s box office hit “Jumper” just came out on DVD a week ago - and she’s been busily interviewing as part of her press duties.
Recently chatting with the AP, Rachel revealed that she felt a little uncomfortable filming love scenes with co-star-turned-boyfriend Hayden Christensen in the sci-fi thriller.
“It’s always awkward and hard to film love scenes, it’s so unnatural, and it’s mechanical,” she said. “Actually Doug [Liman, director] made it very free and we went with it - and a shot of alcohol always helps ease the nerves.”
Despite the uneasiness, Rachel added that she had a wonderful time making the film with Hayden, Jamie Bell and Samuel L Jackson.
“It was so fantastic, the whole experience,” she said. “We all became close friends, but I also respect all of them as actors so I got to learn things from them. I was very fortunate.”
Fit for a McQueen
Janet Jackson was at last night’s opening of Alexander McQueen’s new store in Los Angeles. So were Balthazar Getty, Eve, Anthony Kiedis, Ioan Gruffudd and Sex and the City hunk Jason Lewis.
But the spotlight was definitely centered on Beth Ditto and her band, Gossip.
The singer's five-song set was hands-in-the-air fun! She wore custom McQueen: a form-hugging red sequined bodysuit (later changing into a rainbow colored butterfly-printed chiffon number); she swiped cigarettes from fans so she could smoke while singing; she grabbed a photographer’s camera to take some pics and even climbed on top of a very unsteady table to rally the crowd to sing along with her.
But even the 27-year-old has her limits…
When someone offered her a glass of bubbly, she politely declined, explaining, “I have to go to Arkansas tomorrow. It’s my brother’s graduation.”
McQueen’s shop sits on Melrose Avenue, just steps away from other high-end boutiques, like Marc Jacobs and Diane Von Furstenberg stores.
If last night was any indication, Mr. McQueen is going to have no trouble fitting in.
Within minutes of arriving, I spotted Rebecca De Mornay whipping out a credit card to buy a $315 black pashmina-like wrap with outlines of red skulls. She wore it for the rest of the evening.
Sex in Another City
Sex and the City: The Movie premiered today…but not in New York. Instead, New Line chose to hold the first premiere across the pond in London. (Where Sarah Jessica Parker attempted to blend with the shrubbery in an Alexander McQueen dress, Fred Leighton diamonds and Phillip Treacy hat.)
You'd think they'd unveil the film in the city where it all takes place, the one that's often referred to as the "fifth character," but no…the Big Apple viewing actually doesn't happen until May 27.
And if you're a New Yorker feeling annoyed that the Brits are seeing the movie more than two weeks before you, take heart: They're not premiering the flick in Los Angeles at all.
There is, however, a Skyy-sponsored screening here in L.A. the day before it opens in theaters, along with a postpremiere Q&A with Kristin Davis. You better believe I RSVP'd for that one months ago, so check back for all the details!
