Bridget Moynahan Looks Good At “Noise” Premiere

Bridget Moynahan Looks Good At “Noise” Premiere

Didn’t she JUST have a baby not too long ago?  Bridget Moynahan showed up at the premiere of “Noise” last night at the Arclight Cinemas and she looked amazing.

The new mommy was wearing a strapless black knee-length gown with silver hoop earrings and a small black handbag.  And there was definitely something a little more “glowing” about her, now that she’s a mom.

Moynahan stars alongside big names Tim Robbins and William Hurt in her new movie.  And from the reviews it sounds like a winner.

Robbins plays David Owen, a man who can’t handle the noise of the Big Apple, but lives there all the same.  He transforms himself into “The Rectifier” and fights the sources of the noise that drives him crazy.  It’s a black comedy with some dimension.

Box Office: Potter adds $28.8M on Saturday, Transformers tops $200M

 Harry Potter

HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX continued its box office roll on Saturday grabbing an estimated $28.82M, putting the fifth installment of the Potter franchise past the $100M mark on just its 4th day of release. It will be tough for HP5 to reach $80M for its traditional Fri-Sun 3-day, but my revised 3-day projection is still a magical $76M, giving it a 5-day opening of $137.9M. That’s easily the biggest opening 5 days in the Potter series.

TRANSFORMERS delivered an estimated $14.95M on Saturday, as the Autobots and Decepticons charged past the $200M mark. The Michael Bay-by-way-of-Hasbro action pic is clearly attracting more families, and I’m revising my 3-day from $34M to a better-than-expected $35.5M. RATATOUILLE cooked up another $7.2M and should get to $18M for the 3-day. LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD saw a nice Saturday surge for an estimated $4.62M. Old man John McClane will climb past the $100M mark sometime on Sunday. Finally LICENSE TO WED (Warner Bros) maintains a spot in the top 5 with $2.87M, which will likely translate to a $7M weekend.

Also of note among more limited releases -

The gruesome After Dark release CAPTIVITY is an unmitigated disaster with just $489,000 at just over 1,000 locations and an expected 3-day of $1.3M. It’s still unbeliveable that an  Oscar nominated director like Roland Joffe (THE KILLING FIELDS, THE MISSION) was at the helm of this sadistic venture.

YOU KILL ME starring Ben Kingsley and Tea Leoni has met with a lukewarm response to its expansion to 245 locations. The black comedy yielded just $890 per screen on Saturday and an estimated 3-day take of $539,000.

RESCUE DAWN, from director Werner Herzog and produced by NBA All-Star Elton Brand, expanded to 38 locations, and it is showing real box office potency. The Vietnam-era POW film generated $5,300 per location on Saturday, and its 3-day PTA will likely top $12,500.

The top PTA on the arthouse circuit this weekend is Patrice Leconte’s MY BEST FRIEND starring Daniel Auteuil. At just 3 locations, it delivered over $9,000 per on Saturday, and this French film has a shot at a $20,000 PTA for the weekend.

Sundance Winner JOSHUA and Warner Independent’s INTRODUCING THE DWIGHTS were far less successful adding screens. Also, Steve Buscemi’s INTERVIEW opened to lukewarm numbers at 6 locations and the long-shelved SHORTCUT TO HAPPINESS, directed by Alec Baldwin, should have stayed on the Yari Film Group shelves. This dog opened on 22 screens, none in major cities, and it will likely finish with only $25,000-$30,000 in total ticket sales.

I’ve gone online with my Saturday Estimates for the top 38 grossing films followed by my Revised 3-Day Estimates using an approximate Sunday drop. All that and more at FantasyMoguls.

Fido Movie Review

Fido

Following the great Zombie war (which I’m sure will be chronicled in World War Z), people now live in gated communities outside the “wild zone,” an area where Zombies roam free. Thanks to a ZomCor (motto: “Better Life Through Containment”) most everyone now owns at least one collar controlled servant Zombie. Until now, everyone except the Robinson family.Young Timmy Robinson (K’Sun Ray) makes friends with Fido (Billy Connolly), who attacks the next-door neighbor, and things spiral out of control. Carrie-Anne Moss and Dylan Baker (who must be the second go-to guy under William H. Macy for the atypical 1950’s man) co-star as Helen and Bill Robinson.

While Shaun of the Dead played with the conventions of the Zombie film genre, Fido plays against them. Set in an alternative 1950’s suburban American, the story walks the line between parody/satire and black comedy. Hilariously funny and filled with some fresh ideas, Fido is sure to receive a huge reception when it hits theaters nationwide.

Fido makes me wonder how far they can go with the horror comedy genre. When Shaun of the Dead hit, I thought that was it - there could be no others. But I am most certainly wrong.

Running Time: 91 min.
Release Date: March 9th, 2007 (limited)
Distributors: Lionsgate
Starring: Henry Czerny, Carrie-Anne Moss, Tim Blake Nelson, Billy Connolly, Dylan Baker
Directed by: Andrew Currie

Poor Things: Borat’s Brother Makes Movies

No, we’re not talking about the long speculated Borat sequel. Ash Baron Cohen is making a movie. That’s right, Sacha Baron Cohen’s brother.

AshAsh Baron Cohen has actually been directing films since 1995. His previous efforts include Bang, Pups (which starred Micha Barton and Burt Reynolds), and This Girl’s Life (James Wood, Kip Pardue, Rosario Dawson, Michael Rapaport). His first feature, Bang, was named one of the Top 10 films of 1997 by the Los Angeles Times.

Even if you’ve seen one of his films, you probably wouldn’t know it because until know he’s gone under the name “Ash”. Yeah, that’s right - just ASH. I wonder if that will change in the aftermath of Borat’s success.

Let’s take a look at some of Ash’s previous work:

Let’s talk about his new film: Shirley MacLaine and Olympia Dukakis are both in negotiations to star in the indie black comedy. The movie would reunite Steel Magnolias cast members MacLaine and Dukakis. Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV screenwriter Trent Haaga penned the script. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing.

Based on “true events,” Poor Things follows two con-artist women who befriend and murder homeless men in order to collect their life insurance policies.

Filming will begin in early May in Los Angeles or New Mexico.
