Shortened “Southland Tales” Debuts At AFI Fest
On a rather quiet Friday night in Hollywood, the seemingly lone movie event took place at Arclight Cinemas for a showing of Southland Tales.
The film’s stars, including Sarah Michelle Gellar, Dwayne Johnson and Cheri Oteri, showed up at the Hollywood spot for the AFI Fest screening presented by Audi.
The movie, which was shortened after poor reviews in Cannes, is told to be: “An ensemble piece set in the futuristic landscape of Los Angeles on July 4, 2008, as it stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster. Boxer Santaros (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) is an action star who’s stricken with amnesia. His life intertwines with Krysta Now (Sarah Michelle Gellar), an adult film star developing her own reality television project, and Ronald Taverner (Seann William Scott), a Hermosa Beach police officer who holds the key to a vast conspiracy.”
You can catch Southland tales in theaters when it is released nationally on November 14, 2007.
In the meantime, enjoy the pictures from last night’s screening of “Southland Tales” (November 2).
Jessica Simpson Plans Romantic Vacation
The couple that travels together, stays togetheror, at least, so says rocky-relationship queen Jessica Simpson.
Pals close to the music scene’s newest country crooner say Jessica is planning a quick summer get away for herself and beau Tony Romo.
“She thinks they need some quality alone time,” says friend of Jess, who is still reeling after her relationship reached the breakup brink.
“She believes a vacation will really do a lot to reconnect them. Tony agreed to go, but it was all Jessica’s idea.”
Timing, however, is a problem. Jessica’s crazy busy with photo shoots and interviews to promote her soon-to-be-released country album. And Tony starts football training camp July 24.
“But she’s determined to squeak out a week together before then,” says her pal. “So if she has to clear the decks on her own schedule to make it happen, she so will.”
Dollhouse Casting Alert!

Yeeee!!!! Just in case you need more reason to get excited about Joss Whedon's return to television with the upcoming FOX drama series Dollhouse, here is some just-leaked casting scoop on who is joining the gang, including a certain Battlestar fan favorite (Helo!). Awe. Some.
Tahmoh Penikett as Paul Smith: 30s, good looks hardened by a cynical distaste for most of humanity. An FBI field agent, he's been chasing the urban myth of the Dollhouse long enough to have lost any shot at promotion. Becomes obsessed with and a twisted romantic foil for Echo (Eliza Dushku).
Fran Kranz as Topher Brink: 20s, genius programmer who's articulate, nerdily attractive and blithely amoral. He's responsible for imprinting the Dolls—and making sure they stay unaware of anything. Is fascinated by the science and kind of digging the illegality. Fun to be around but might not be remotely trustworthy.
Dichen Lachman as Sierra: 20s, Asian (or certainly not Caucasian). Strikingly beautiful. A Doll like Echo, she has every personality in the world but her own. Is not as self-aware as Echo but is instinctively drawn to her as a friend.
Enver Gjokaj as Victor: 20s, handsome and fit. A Doll, and the other closest thing to a friend Echo has. Childlike when he's inactive, and everything from Errol Flynn to a young DeNiro when he's active.
Cyndi Lauper to sing on As the World Turns
Count Grammy and Emmy-winner Cyndi Lauper as a fan of As the World Turns’ gay couple Noah and Luke. Like the dedicated “Nuke” lovers out there, Cyndi’s been anxious for the duo’s romance to move more swiftly on the soap. She’s decided to do something about it — and promote her new album at the same time. Cyndi Lauper will appear as herself on the July 3 episode of As the World Turns, sing a couple of songs and subtly let Luke and Noah know that she supports their relationship.
The controversy surrounding Nuke’s soap story — that their romance is moving too slowly because they’re not heterosexual, but homosexual — has vexed fans. Lauper told Entertainment Weekly, “I think they’re young, these guys, and they’re sweet. They’re taking their time and struggling with the heart issues, which is even more endearing than just being like the straight couples, half-naked and having sex all over the place. The best way to people is through the heart, and that’s why I think it’s kind of interesting the way they’ve done it. It’s about love.’’
On the episode, Luke gets to know Cyndi when he interviews her for the Oakdale University newspaper about her appearance at Yo’s. Based on their talk, Cyndi dedicates one of her biggest hits, and one symbolic of diversity, “True Colors,” to Luke. “True Colors” is also the name of Cyndi’s tour in support of her new dance CD Bring Ya to the Brink.
Musical guests are popping up all over the soaps of late; if Cyndi’s goes as well as Snoop Dogg’s visit to One Life to Live, that’s fine by me.
