Haylie Duff: Lunch Date with Nick Zano

Haylie Duff: Lunch Date with Nick Zano

She’s been spending all of her time lately helping MTV search for the next Elle Woods for the Broadway version of Legally Blonde.  But over the weekend Haylie Duff was focused on her boyfriend Nick Zano.

The “Napoleon Dynamite” babe was spotted out on a lunch at Sharkey’s restaurant yesterday, looking fine in a pink tank top layered overtop a white one teamed with some black yoga pants and sneakers.

The happy twosome looked to be truly enjoying one another’s company as they held hands while they strolled down the street.  And Nick even held the door for his sweetie as she got into the car.

Miss Duff has a lot to look forward to in the upcoming months, with plenty of projects in the pipeline, including “Dead End,” “Doesn’t Texas Ever End,” and “Slightly Single in LA.”

Jennifer Garner Enjoys the Great Outdoors

Jennifer Garner Enjoys the Great Outdoors

She’s been spending a ton of time on her current gig, a television version of Cyrano de Bergerac (she starred in the Broadway version earlier this year).  But yesterday, Jennifer Garner took some time off to spend with family and friends.

The “Alias” babe began the day with her 2 ½ year old daughter Violet, heading over to feed the ducks and swans at Self-Realization Fellowship’s Lake Shrine, also the location of the Mahatma Gandhi World Peace Memorial.

Jen looked cute in a red top underneath a cream-colored cardigan with a pair of jeans and flats, while Violet rocked a white top, red trousers, and a pair of white sneakers.

Later on, Garner was spotted out and about in Los Angeles, California on her way to pay a visit to a friend’s house.  By then, the temperature had warmed up, hence she ditched the cardigan and switched to flip-flops.

Jesse L. Martin: goodbye TV, hello Broadway!

Jesse L. MartinIf you saw the previews of this week’s episode of Law & Order, you know that it’s Jesse L. Martin’s last show. The NBC promo implies that Detective Ed Green has gotten into major trouble and will be brought up on charges for his actions, perhaps lose his badge. That would be a very dramatic way to wrap up his nine years on Law and Order, and unlike the near-fatal shooting his character survived a couple of years ago, it leaves open the door for a guest stint down the road. But not too soon. Jesse L. Martin is in talks to star in a Broadway version of Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, taking on the Sidney Poitier role.

The 1967 movie depicts a love story involving a successful doctor with a woman he meets while on vacation in Hawaii. He’s black, she’s white. When she brings him home to meet her loving parents in San Francisco, and to announce their plans to marry, her folks are stunned. The interracial love story was considered groundbreaking and bold for the time. In the play, Martin as John Wade Prentice, will still fall for Joanna Drayton, however it will hardly seem stunning or shocking today — unless a lot of changes are planned in the stage play.

Kenny Leon, who directed A Raisin in the Sun — another Poitier picture — on stage and in the TV adaption for ABC with Sean Combs in the Sidney role — is going to direct the play. It’s set to open next September in New York.

In 2005, Ashton Kutcher and Bernie Mac starred in a film called Guess Who, an inside-out interpretation of William Rose’s original screenplay. Rose’s work was an Oscar winner; the Kutcher-Mac effort was a bomb.

There’s buzz about who’s going to play Joanna’s parents for the Broadway, with names like Michael Douglas, Diane Keaton and Sigourney Weaver all being named. They’ll have big shoes to fill, following in Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn’s steps.

For Jesse Martin, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner will mark his return to Broadway. He was an original member of Rent, and later starred in the movie. Martin is also preparing a film based on the life and unfortunate death of singer Marvin Gaye.

Would you watch a Marissa Jaret Winokur daily talk show?

Marissa Jaret WinokurOn the theory that it worked for another actress who play Tracy Turnblad, Marissa Jaret Winokur is going to star in her own daytime talk show, just like Ricki Lake before her. (Can Nikki Blonsky be next?)

Marissa J, who’s currently spinning, twirling and trying to look graceful on Dancing With the Stars, will be developing a syndicated yakker (industry talk for talk show) for Sony Pictures Television. The fact that another company is also doing the same thing for Marie Osmond means one thing: producers think that if you can dance, you can talk. That’s a show business axiom, isn’t it? Her show, if it flies, will be for fall 2009.

Sony has dipped in syndication before with the Wayne Brady Show, which failed to click but did win the star a Daytime Emmy. Marissa is already an award winner, grabbing the 2003 Tony as Best Actress in a musical for playing Tracy in the Broadway version of Hairspray opposite Harvey Fierstein.

On Dancing, she’s made some news not for winning (yet), but for announcing that she’s having a baby with her husband Judah. Marissa isn’t carrying the child, though. She has a surrogate. In 2001 she had cervical cancer and is unable to bear children naturally.

Marissa has appeared on TV in the forgettable Pam Anderson series Stacked in 2006, and she’s done voice work on King of the Hill and American Dad. She’s very talented, very personable, has a story that’s very relateable to women and will soon be a new mom. She could be a terrific choice for a talk show. As good as Marie or Kirstie Alley or Paula Deen or the other names that have been circulated of late. She’s also a fresh face, someone who can emerge as a bigger star thanks to a daily show. My guess is that they’ll put her in situations more like Rosie O’Donnell than Ricki Lake, though. I see a format that’s not about talking with troubled teens (Ricki) but inviting stars on to promote and maybe sing or do a bit.
