Kevin Smith Remembers George Carlin

In our obituary post last night, I mentioned how my favorite big screen performance of Carlin’s was in Kevin Smith’s Jersey Girl. Smith was a filmmaker who used Carlin in his films when available. Watching his few appearances, I’m shocked that his career in film never blew up. Smith takes a look back at the great comedy legend in a guest column for Newsweek:
“In 2001, George did me a solid when he accepted the part of the orally fixated hitchhiker who knew exactly how to get a ride in “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.” When he wrapped his scene in that flick, I thanked him for making the time, and he said, “Just do me a favor: Write me my dream role one day.” When I inquired what that’d be, he offered, “I wanna play a priest who strangles children.” It was a classic Carlin thing to say: a little naughty and a lot honest. I always figured there’d be time to give George what he asked for. Unfortunately, he left too soon. He was, and will likely remain, the smartest person I’ve ever met. But really, he was much more than just a person. Without a hint of hyperbole, I can say he was a god, a god who cussed.”

Four Talking Posters From The Spirit

When I first heard that Yahoo had talking posters from Frank Miller’s The Spirit, I thought to myself “Cool, this is the future of movie marketing”. I mean, eventually one-sheet displays will be replaced with flatscreen televisions which can easily switch in and out various movie posters. Say a screening of The Happening just gets out, the theater can load movie posters of films that people who went to see an M Night movie would also enjoy. As you leave The Dark Knight, posters from other comic book movies would light your path of exit. And this new technology would allow for animated and interactive posters.
So when I clicked over to Yahoo I was very disappointed to find four standard character posters. The talking gimmick is just a gimmick. You move your mouse over a poster and a sound clip from that character is played. Sure, it’s interaction, but pretty lamely executed. I was expecting for the characters to come to life. I was expecting their lips to move. Was I expecting too much? Check out the lameness for yourself on Yahoo. Or you could star at the four posters above and pretend they are saying the superimposed quotes. It’s probably just as good.

Taylor Swift Films Cameo Role For “Hannah Montana”
In a welcome announcement, the highly anticipated “Hannah Montana: The Movie” currently being filmed in and around Nashville features a cameo role from Nashville native and country sensation Taylor Swift.
The 18-year-old award winning Swift filmed her role a week ago, playing herself and singing one of her own songs in the background of a scene.
American Idol contestant Bucky Covington and fellow country singers Rascal Flatts also appear in the movie. All three acts are also signed to Disney’s Lyric Street Records.
Miley Cyrus and her dad Billy Ray Cyrus both star in the Hannah Montana movie, due out in theaters next year (2009).
Ghost Whisperer Gets the Jamie Kennedy Experience
Already adept at Screaming, Jamie Kennedy is going to have to lower his voice.
The Malibu’s Most Wanted funnyman will be joining the cast of Ghost Whisperer this fall as an academic who bonds with Jennifer Love Hewitt’s supernaturally sensitive mystery solver.
Kennedy’s psych grad-student character, Eli, will ultimately be taking the place of former series regular Jay Mohr’s Professor Rick Payne, who will be heading off on sabbatical a few episodes into season four.
Recently, Kennedy, who starred in the first two Scream films before meeting a gruesome end, has had guest spots on Criminal Minds, Reaper and Mind of Mencia, and he’ll appear in the upcoming spoof flick Extreme Movie.
