Tila Tequila: I Helped Gay Marriage

Tila Tequila: I Helped Gay Marriage

She’s been blasting stereotypes and societal norms ever since her MTV reality show A Shot at Love first hit the airwaves.  And now Tila Tequila is taking credit for the State of California’s decision to drop the ban on gay marriage.

At the Hollywood premiere of “The Love Guru” last night at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, Tila told press, “Before it came out, everyone was still a little apprehensive about [same sex relationships].  Then they realized, ‘Wow, everyone is really into this stuff, and it is fine.’ The next thing you know, [gay marriage] is legal.”

As for her own love life, Miss Tequila says she’s hoping to tie the knot someday.  “I definitely want to… definitely,” she said.  The only question is, will her spouse be a man or a woman?

“Sometimes you feel like you get a little too much of one side, and you feel like the other side is better,” she commented.

No Nuptials for Knight

TR Knight, Mark Cornelson

T.R. Knight and his boyfriend of less than a year, college student Mark Cornelsen, are not getting married anytime soon.

In fact, Knight says he wasn’t able to fathom the idea of saying “I do” until just a couple of weeks ago, when the California Supreme Court legalized gay marriage.

“It was never an option,” Knight told me last night at a gay marriage celebration in West Hollywood. “You realize more when something like [the Supreme Court decision] happens that you’ve been treated like second-class citizens. But it’s simply a matter of our rights and freedom.”

Knight’s plans for marriage are so far off that he’s stumped when asked to describe his fantasy wedding.

“I haven’t been planning on it, so I don’t know,” Knight says. “I don’t have one of those books made up. I’m going to have to give that some thought.”

Knight and Cornelsen seem to be OK with the rumors of an impending marriage that began after I reported in April that Knight had signed on to host last night’s event.

“T.R. called me one morning and said, ‘Oh my god, they just said on the radio that we were getting married,’ ” Cornelsen recalls with a laugh.

The event, put together by the Matthew Shepard Foundation and Love and Pride jewelry designer Udi Behr, included a group commitment ceremony of about 50 same-sex couples who also promised to vote against the upcoming ballot measure that would ban gay marriage. The sunset gathering included a performance of “Amazing Grace” by singer Pepper Mashay and guitarist Steve Oliver.

Jay Leno also stopped by to show his support and chat with Knight and Matthew Shepard’s mom, Judy Shepard.

“The vice president is pleased to be a grandfather for the sixth time,” spokeswoman Megan McGinn said.

Dick Cheney revealed last month that the baby would be a boy. “I’m delighted I’m about to be a grandparent for the sixth time,” he told ABC News Radio. “I’m looking forward to the arrival of a new grandson.”

Cheney’s press secretary confirmed in December that the couple were expecting; later that month, President Bush, who opposes gay marriage, told PEOPLE: “I think Mary is going to be a loving soul to her child. And I’m happy for her.”

Ellen Degeneres to marry Portia de Rossi

ellen degeneres; portia de rossiOn today’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Ellen will announce that she and long-time girlfriend Portia de Rossi are getting married.

Her announcement is in response to this week’s ruling from the California Supreme Court that everybody has a “right to marry” whomever they choose. The justices ruled that the state’s ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional. It makes California the second state, after Massachusetts, that will allow same-sex marriage. The legal battle began in San Francisco when the mayor allowed same-sex couples to marry (Rosie O’Donnell and her partner, Kelly, married at that time).

Ellen and Portia have been together since December of 2004 when de Rossi was still on Arrested Development. And speaking of de Rossi, she has been cast in a co-starring role of a new comedy pilot for ABC. The series is from Victor Fresco, a writer and producer on My Name is Earl. It will be a single-camera series about “a moral guy trying to do right in an amoral world.”
