Weeds: The Whole Blah Damn Thing

Mary-Louise Parker
What a relief! Now that we’ve ditched the dead weight (sorry, Bubbie) Weeds can finally get down to business. The Agrestic and Ren Mar worlds are slowly coming together, which should please the Doug fans. Some familiar faces are making their way to Nancy’s new home, and that could mean trouble for her.

A few of the ghosts of season three appeared in this episode. After hearing Doug mention the Majestic community’s outrage over Celia’s arrest, I was surprised to see Pam back at Celia’s side. In true perv fashion, Doug and Dean were watching Andy’s foot fetish porn film. Even “Cankles” Carilli tracked Doug down at his dude suite to confront him about some “insurance discrepancies.” While I’m glad that the supporting players of Agrestic/Majestic are popping up from time to time, I wish we could get a hint about Conrad and Heylia’s fate. I’m really starting to miss them. Does anyone else think it’s strange that Nancy hasn’t mentioned them or tried to contact them? Yes, I know that Romany Malco and Tonye Patano are off the show, but it’s not like the characters are dead to Nancy.

It only took the Botwins about 24 hours to wrestle with major life-and-death issues; not bad. Andy reduced human existence to a series of blahs in a manner that only he could. The Bubbie dilemma put the Botwins’ strange approach to communication on display. The family never got together to discuss Bubbie, instead choosing to break the discussion down into several smaller conversations. There was the guys’ talk in the van, Lenny and Shane’s man-to-man chat, and Andy and Lenny’s argument on the beach. On a side note, Alexander Gould can hold his own with any actor on this show. When it was time to do the actual plug-pulling, however, the Botwins banded together and said goodbye as a family. That has to count for something.

I never thought I’d see the day when Nancy would learn from her mistakes. All she needed was the Jesus-cam and some practical tips from Guillermo. Nancy really did give a poor performance in her test run, didn’t she? She didn’t even have a name for her fictitious face cream. Kudos to her for taking Guillermo’s fashion advice to heart. Who knew that Nancy’s most shocking outfit ever would consist of khaki shorts, a cutesy pink top, and a visor? I hope we get to see her in more hilarious ensembles like that. On second thought, it might be overwhelming, kind of like Celia’s prison transformation. Perhaps Nancy can find the MILF alternative to J. Crew.

At the moment I’m not terribly impressed with Celia’s surveillance skills. The woman had a disposable camera! Couldn’t Till have loaned her something more modern? Till must have a pretty weak case against Guillermo if he’s tentatively cutting a deal with such an inexperienced informant. Unless Celia got something in writing, this deal might not pan out for her. Will she stick with Till, defect to Nancy’s side, or become a double agent?

My favorite lines of the night:

Next week–Lenny thinks Nancy’s a prostitute (wrong show), Celia reports to Till, and Doug turns up in Ren Mar.

Gary Oldman Confirms Roles in Robert Zemeckis’ A Christmas Carol

Gary Oldman not only confirmed that he is in Robert Zemeckis’ upcoming performance capture adaptation of A Christmas Carol, but revealed that he is playing three characters in the film.

“I play [the ghost of] Marley, Bob Cratchit, and Tiny Tim,” Oldman told at the Dark Knight junket. “I saw the designs, and the realizations of London and the characters. The design of it, and the look of it, is beautiful. It’s quite stunning. It should be quite magical.”

Oldman isnt the only one playing multiple roles. The film stars Jim Carrey as Ebenezer Scrooge, the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come. At one point Michael J. Fox was rumored to be Tiny Tim, and Christopher Lloyd as Marley’s ghost. Both Zemeckis regulars are even inaccurately listed as such on imdb. Oldman talks about the unusual performance capture process for Tiny Tim:

“They put you in a trench. They’re on platforms that they wheel in and wheel out. So you’ve got all this crew moving floor around. And when I’m walking on my crutches, the actors are much higher than me, so the eyelines work. And later they will animate little legs on me,” Oldman said. “It would be so expensive to do it [live action]. And you can do things with the ghosts that you couldn’t do in the more conventional way. Much like [Batman Begins and The Dark Knight], [Zemeckis] has sort of reinvented The Christmas Carol. It’s probably closer to how Dickens saw it.”

Oldman insists that while the process is different than a normal movie, it isn’t that different.

“It’s kind of like shooting a regular movie I think. Alot of people say ‘working in that motion capture with Bob Zemeckis, it’s like theater, isn’t it?’ And often the people who have never done theater say that. I don’t think it’s like theater, but I feel it’s like doing a regular movie, but without the breaks abd the costumes. You just keep going, and there is no lighting, so you don’t have to wait for two hours while they turn the set around. You actually keep filming.”

Oldman can be seen next in The Dark Knight, which hits theaters on July 18th 2008.

Jennifer Garner: Out to Lunch with Violet

Jennifer Garner: Out to Lunch with Violet

Serving as an excellent example to mothers everywhere, Jennifer Garner was spotted enjoying a little mommy-daughter bonding yesterday in Brentwood, California.

The “Juno” hottie treated her 2 ½ year old daughter Violet (not pictured) to a lunch date at the swanky Trattoria Amici before taking her for a stroll around a nearby neighborhood.

Always the consummate sexy momma, Garner looked cute in a casual black summer dress and black sunglasses teamed with a pair of white sandals and a matching handbag.

And it looks like Jen had better enjoy these quiet moments while she can.  She has three new movies in the pipeline including, “This Side of Truth,” “The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,” and “Be With You,” as well as a television version of her Broadway hit “Cyrano de Bergerac.

Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner Team Up

They’re both box office babes in and of themselves.  So when Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner announced they’d be working together on “The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” we knew it was gonna be good.

Garner is returning to work after a brief respite following her uber-successful run on Broadway in “Cyrano de Bergerac” and it looks like she’s still on top of her game.

The “Alias” actress was spotted on the “Ghosts” set in Boston yesterday (Thursday) chasing away the winter chill with a knit hat, wool scarf and circa-1984 winter coat.

Her studly co-star, McConaughey (who is expecting a baby later this year) looked handsome in character with his fake long coif as he clutched a camera.

According to press, “The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” is about, “A bachelor who is haunted by the ghosts of his past girlfriends at his younger brother’s wedding.”
