Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Dummy Love

ATHF S05E07: Dummy Love
(S05E07) “You seen my fingers?” - Carl

Right from the beginning, I was ready to hate this episode. But I just couldn’t. At first, it seemed so corny and felt like a rip-off of Chucky merged with a bad R.L. Stine novel. But the character of The Dummy (despite his limited vocabulary) was hilarious and the decision to knock on every horror movie cliché imaginable was well done too. It’s always great when a show like ATHF branches out and tries to do something different like mocking an entire genre in ten minutes.

The episode began with a special delivery to Frylock. Someone sent him a homicidal ventriloquist’s dummy that could only say, “Kill!” After it was discovered that he had a pocketful of fingers, all the scary movie clichés played out. Cutting power to the telephone, leaving sharp objects (scissors, a battle axe) lying around, suggesting a trip the “the cabin,” the anniversary of the day a schoolbus full of children blew up, and on and on. Every line was delivered by Frylock and Shake with such deadpan deliveries and that made it even funnier.

Then it was discovered that Carl had a dummy of his own who could only say, “Die!” Both dummies fell in love (the montage of romance movie clichés was not nearly as good as the horror stuff) and then came to life because Meatwad wished it so. Little bit of a Pinocchio nod there… if Pinocchio were a gay, murderous dummy.

So here’s what’s on my mind…

Overall, really funny episode. Shake getting tossed in jail at the end was just the icing on the cake. Savor it though because there are only two left this season.

Alison Lohman to Replace Ellen Page in Sam Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell

Blonds tells fewer blog jokes, it’s a fact, so maybe director Sam Raimi is onto something by casting actress Alison Lohman (Beowulf, Flicka) in the lead role formerly occupied by Ellen Page (Juno) in his upcoming horror thriller Drag Me to Hell.

Oscar nominee Page aborted the project days ago amid rumors that she was unhappy with the script by Raimi and his brother Ivan Raimi. There was also the trusty rumor that Page forever hisses at her agent anytime she hears the words “how about a horror movie, Ellen” post-Academy Awards. As our pub brothers at FirstShowing have pointed out, Variety reported on Sunday that the real reason might have been, yep, “scheduling differences” after all…

“We were racing to start production so that we could accommodate Ellen’s schedule,” Ghost House and Mandate said in a joint statement. “But like so many other productions trying to start before the potential SAG strike date, this one needed more time, and we had to push back the start of production.”

Indeed, the SAG strike is fast becoming the new “forgot my homework,” or, sure, WGA strike. Lohman, who is almost 30 but looks teenish, is of Irish descent, an environmentalist and I’m sure she can belt out a scream with the best of them. But I dunno, does she have the spark, that hamburger phone aura, that Page has?

Do You Have The Crazy? Two Men Stabbed While Watching The Signal

The SignalImagine this. It’s Sunday night and you’re sitting in a movie theater watching The Signal, an independent horror movie about a mysterious transmission which invades every cell phone, radio and TV, turning people into killers. And then suddenly, two men sitting in separate areas of the theater are randomly attacked and stabbed by an unknown man who was watching the movie. This isn’t just a scenario, this actually happened last night at the AMC Theater in Fullerton. Is The Signal real?

The unknown man supposedly started stabbing at the theater seat and then began stabbing the victim. As he fled, he stabbed another victim sitting near the exit. Both men were stabbed in the arm and were taken to separate hospitals. Neither men knew the suspect, who escaped without arrest. The film was paused while police conducted their investigation. When it was resumed, the fist scene was a stabbing. Coincidence?
