Sony Says Tobey Macguire is Still Spider-Man…For Now

Two days ago, we delved into rumors that the next Peter Parker could be played by the Macguire-esque Patrick Fugit (Almost Famous, Wristcutters) or the younger, spunkish Michael Angarano (Sky High). Well, Sony wants to put some Internet skywriting out there and fast. Their message is: “Tobey Macguire, you’re the best, you’re our Spider-Man!…right?” Sony’s head of media relations tells IESB…
“No one is being considered for the role but Tobey. Period.”
IESB adds that numerous inside sources and agencies have confirmed that no actor in Hollywood or Bollywood has been contacted for Peter Parker. Prior to this, CHUD caught word from a producer on Fugit’s latest film who said the rumor was totally bunk. Let’s all electric slide back to square one, okay?
This premature casting drama went supernova because a higher-up at Marvel speculated that Sony will have Spider-Man 4 in theaters in 2010, which supported rumors that Sony wants to shoot Spider-Man 4 and Spider-Man 5 back-to-back. Whatever Sony says, there is movement happening with the franchise, so a little interwebs madness is expected, healthier than eating bacon even.
I don’t think Fugit would be (have been) an unwise choice, he’s talented, but he shares Macguire’s sleepy, melancholy style to a fault. Peter wonders why Shia Labeouf is not in the mix—he’s probably my first choice for Parker, and I really hope they bring in a new director as well. What’s interesting is that the fan outrage at these Macguire replacement rumors is not really there, which is odd. And fanboy hindsight on Spider-Man 3 seems to grow dimmer as time passes. More on the next Spidey flick(s) as it develops.
And…Why Not?: Jan De Bont to Direct Point Break 2: Indo

“This sequel is, like, so Hollywood.”
Surreal. It’s beginning to feel like I’m the windshield and Hollywood’s remakes and sequels are the insects. Jan de Bont (yes, Speed, Speed 2: Cruise Control) will direct a sequel to 1991’s Keanu Reeves/Patrick Swayze/Gary Busey starrer Point Break entitled Point Break: Indo. Yes, it’s a theatrical sequel from RGM and Essential Entertainment. IESB reports that Reeves and Swayze have most likely been asked to return. Bodhi lives! This wise-ass guy from my middle school cafeteria days owes me $5. IESB also has the official plot synopsis…
When Billy Dalton, military special ops and star surfer, is disqualified from the pro-surfing tour, he takes off for the coast of Bali looking for the perfect wave. While there he’s recruited by a private security force who are trying to find a gang known as The Bush Administration, surfing outlaws and modern day pirates who work like “The Ex-Presidents,” a bank robbing crew from Malibu twenty years ago.
The Bush Administration? Really? That rots my brain. Of note, however, is that the original screenwriter, W. Peter Illiff (Patriot Games, Varsity Blues and m/) also penned this installment, so the bitchin’ dialogue should remain intact. The production company is also boasting that de Bont’s film looks to have the “most extreme action stunts ever caught on camera.” Hmm, cameo by MEG? Kidding.
As you may recall, a Point Break sequel has been kicked around for many months. I’m rather skeptical that Swayze will be back due to his health, and back in March Reeves spat on all sequels, so…maybe Lori Petty can return a la Sandra Bullock? But here’s hoping for a gnarly reunion, I know Busey is (even though his character already RIP’d). Too bad director Kathryn Bigelow has bigger fish to fry, like Iraq. Her original (she also helmed Near Dark and Strange Days) is still one of the most re-watchable popcorn movies of the ’90s; the action film equivalent to really, really good chewing gum, a nice contact buzz and the smell of Mr. Zoggs’s Sex Wax in the morning.

Bigger and More Giant Robots in Transformers 2?!

Transformers 2 is gearing up for it’s mid-Summer production start and IESB has a juicy rumor on the Decepticon line-up is… and trust me it’s HUGE, epic even….
Scrapper, Bonecrusher, Scavenger, Mixmaster, Hook and Long Haul
That’s right… The six constructicons that combine to transform into the huge robot known as Devastator. Obviously, some of the names will have to be changed for the sequel, since they have already used the names in the first film. Names aside, how cool is that?
Robert also has a possible cast/character listing which includes Chuck, Sam’s funny conspiracy theory-obsessed roommate at Princeton, Professor Colan - Sam’s Physics teacher, a bunch of military personnel, the CEO of Massive Dynamics who will testify in front of congress, a Texas Congressman, an FBI director, and a CNN Reporter.
Check out a vintage Transformers toy commercial featuring Devastator.
