Ashlee Simpson, Pete Wentz Avoid Talking Politics
When it comes to politics, mum’s the word between Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz.
“We don’t get into political discussions, because politics and religion usually end up in a fight – no matter who you’re talking to,” Wentz, 28, told Friends at Tuesday’s Chicago fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.
“Ashlee’s the most supportive girlfriend I’ve ever had,” Wentz says, of his girlfriend of more than a year. “I studied political science for three years in college, but we don’t usually talk about the candidates.”
Not that the topic is completely taboo: “We talk about the actual little nuances of politics, like the Electoral College and interesting things like that,” he says.
About Simpson’s presidential pick, Wentz hints coyly, “I don’t want to put words in her mouth, but I will say that Ashlee supports the candidate you probably think she’d support. We went to Costa Rica and I made her watch the Iowa caucus, and that was really interesting to watch together.”
When it comes to the upcoming elections, “I love Obama for a variety of reasons,” Wentz says, “but I’d say the biggest reason is that we need a candidate who’s not completely entrenched in Washington.”
Meanwhile, Ashlee, 23, hasn’t worn her political leanings on her sleeves, at least not in interviews. Older sister Jessica, however, has shown support for President Bush.
