Jason Schwartzman is HBO’s newest leading man

Jason SchwartzmanJason Schwartzman is officially coming to HBO. The actor will play the lead in Bored to Death, a new comedy from the cable network. Schwartzman has been cast as Jonathan, a struggling writer in this thirties who has a drinking problem. The series, which is set in Brooklyn, follows Jonathan’s post-breakup decision to pretend to be a private eye.

Although he’s not qualified for detective work, Jonathan loves the novels of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. He’ll luck out and solve a few cases, but his lack of experience will often make matters worse for his clients. Novelist Jonathan Ames wrote the pilot and will serve as the show’s executive producer.

I’m looking forward to watching the Bored to Death pilot now that Jason Schwartzman is on board. He hasn’t done a lot of work on television, but he’s had some memorable leading roles in movies like Rushmore and Shopgirl. As far as TV goes, Schwartzman did a guest spot on Freaks and Geeks and starred in the short-lived FOX series Cracked Up.

Can you picture Jason Schwartzman as a private eye?

Gerard Butler Might Still Escape From New York

Gerard Butler Escapes From New York Remake

Rumors of Gerard Butler’s (300) departure from the Escape From New York remake have been greatly exaggerated. Butler, who has been doing press for his new romcom P.S. I Love You, insists that he hasn’t dropped out of the project, but is taking a wait and see position. In October, New Line hired Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines helmer Jonathan Mostow in to rewrite, with an option to direct. The actor points out that no start date has been slated.  If everything lines up again, Butler might indeed take on the character of Snake Plissken.

Originally Len Wiseman was attached to the project, and most recently, hack director Brett Ratner denied involvement in the project after weeks of fanboy protest over the rumored possibility.

NBC denies Friends reunion rumors - UPDATE

FriendsLast night, Jonathan wrote about a report that claimed the six main actors from Friends were going to reunite for a series of one-hour specials.  It also mentioned that the three male leads — Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer — were going to star in a spin-off. Readers responded by either getting their hopes up or cursing NBC for digging up the corpse of a series that died a year and a half ago.

Well, we’ve got more news for you: It ain’t gonna happen, at least according to NBC.

Here’s the update from Jonathan:

“Consider this rumor dead as most of us wisely assumed from the get go. Access Hollywood had this to say earlier today, with a direct quote from Jeff Zucker (CEO of NBC Universal’s TV Group) squashing the rumors.

Also, many thanks to TV’s own Ryan j Budke, who spent numerous hours on the phone this morning with NBC’s Media Relations Department, who had this to say: ’There are currently no plans to have any follow-up to Friends other than Joey, which is still a major part of our comedy line-up and we whole-heartedly support. The rumors started this weekend are just that; rumors. We wish the rest of the cast of Friends continued success in their careers, and would welcome them back at any time, but there are currently no plans for them to appear in their Friends roles.’ “
