Did Steve Wiebe Reclaim His Title as The King Of Kong?

The King of Kong

On Wednesday we told you that Steve Wiebe, noted Donkey Kong competitor and star of the 2007 documentary The King of Kong, was going to attempt to set the Donkey Kong World Record at Microsoft’s MIX08 event tonight in Las Vegas, with referee Walter Day in attendance. Many readers have commented and e-mailed me asking if Wiebe was able to defeat champion Billy Mitchell’s score of 1,050,200 points. A few minutes ago we received the following unsolicited e-mail:

“Steve scored approx. 929,000 and reached the kill screen I believe… Great effort… Thanks, Billy Mitchell”

That’s right, THAT Billy Mitchell e-mailed us to brag that he is still the record holder. I’m sure anyone who has seen the fantastic documentary has something to say about this…

Update: Did Steve Wiebe Reclaim His Title as The King of Kong?

reader Joseph D sent word that Steve Wiebe, noted Donkey Kong competitor and star of the 2007 documentary The King of Kong, will attempt to set the Donkey Kong World Record later today at Microsoft’s MIX08 event tonight in Las Vegas, with referee Walter Day in attendance.

Video game champion Billy Mitchell beat Wiebe’s record in June of 2007, and currently is ranked #1 with 1,050,200 points to Steve’s 1,049,100 points (only 1,100 points separating them). The event takes place during Microsoft’s TAO NIGHTCLUB PARTY from 6:00pm to10:00pm in The Venetian Resort Hotel Casino.

wishes Steve Wiebe good luck.

Transformers: The Ride

“Mortimer, it sucks being homeless, how will we ever get back on top?” “Well, Randolph, you can start by giving me some of the blanket.” “Mortimer! I’ve got it! Transformers…The Movie…The Ride!” “Randolph, we’re back!…No, wait, that’s already been announced.”

IESB reports with much enthusiasm that Paramount Pictures and Hasbro are planning to bring the Autobots and Decepticons where only Jaws, King Kong, Indiana Jones and millions of pissed off, sunburnt families have gone before! The theme park. Whether that means the rumored Transformers “dark ride,” which usually means an indoors adventure ride heavy on the visuals and effects and not a “holy *$%&” rollercoaster, will be located in creaky, old America or Monopoly-monied Dubai, is unknown, but Paramount is said to want the ride up and running sometime after the 2009 release of Transformers 2 but before Transformers 3. So, get your child planning for the next 10 years in order! Actually, you have more like three to four years, but hey, it’s Friday.

This mysterious modern marvel of amusement rides is said to share a resemblance to Disneyland’s Indiana Jones Adventure ride, complete with “life size transforming” characters and possibly, “an amphibious vehicle that guests will board and quickly find themselves in the middle of a battle between the warring giant robotic space aliens.”

So, do you wanna ride the snake Transformer?

Andy Serkis in Tintin

Andy Serkis in TinTin

Peter Jackson regular Andy Serkis (you know, the guy behind the characters of Golumn and King Kong) has signed on to star in the upcoming Tintin trilogy. No word on what character (or characters) Serkis might play.  The film will be shot using performance capture technology similar to that used on Beowulf. And the completed films will be presented in digital 3D.

Jackson and Steven Spielberg are both set to direct one of the films, although the order isn’t clear. Spielberg has said that the third film will either be directed in collaboration between the two, or by a hand picked third director. Rumor has it that Robert Zemeckis’ name has been thrown around.

Filming is set to begin in September 2008.

Based on the classic comic-strip, Tintin follows the adventures of a junior reporter and his faithful dog Snowy.
