Will Smith’s Family Time at “Hancock” Premiere

Will Smith’s Family Time at “Hancock” Premiere

At last night’s Hollywood premiere of “Hancock”, Will Smith made a strong statement about his priorities by bringing his wife and kids along to the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.

The “I Am Legend” hunk posed proudly with his family, sporting a black and white checked three-piece suit with a white button-up shirt and a black tie.  Wife Jada Pinkett-Smith looked gorgeous in a sleeveless floor-length green evening gown.  And their three kids Trey, Jaden, and Willow looked thrilled to be there.

In related news, the private school funded by the Pinkett-Smiths is getting all kinds of media attention as of late.  Over the weekend, the LA Times published an article about the New Village Academy, discussing everything from its inclusion of Scientology principles in the curriculum to the global education policy.

FOX News reports, “According to the school’s mission statement, students ‘recycle plastic bottles at 10 cents per bottle. Once we have $100 (1,000 bottles) we have enough money to buy a goat for a village in Africa, which can ensure the survival of this village.’”

However, critics of this policy are arguing that rather than goats, rural Africans need schools, and the $100 per goat would be better spent on school supplies as well as shoes, electricity, irrigation, and medical supplies.

Katie Couric has her own YouTube channel - VIDEO

Katie CouricLately, the only Katie Couric most people have been seeing is the one that’s depicted in the picture to the right: serious, sober, possessing whatever gravitas she can muster in her role as anchor of the CBS Evening News. But where can you see the goofy Katie, the one that people came to know — and some got sick of — for fifteen years on the Today show?

Why, on YouTube, of course! In fact, Katie has her very own page on the leading video sharing site, where she posts extended Evening News interviews and behind-the-scene footage. The behind-the-scenes stuff is where you see Katie at her most impish, doing things like snapping Larry King’s suspenders as he leads her to the set of his show, singing with Bette Midler, and meeting with mommy bloggers in her office (check out the huge Warhol-esque portrait of herself she has hanging near her desk!).

The LA Times explains that Couric started filming and posting the videos in response to the clips of her that Harry Shearer posted on his My Damn Channel website; she even says “Harry Shearer, I’m gonna get you” on her introductory video.

The videos aren’t bad, though it’s alarming how big of a “posse” Katie drags around with her everywhere. But at least she shows some warmth, as the video below shows. Before and after she was on Larry King Live, she chats up some paparazzi on the way in and a family on the way out, all the time plugging the YouTube channel. So, even if she’s playing it up for her YT camera, it still shows a side of her we haven’t seen in almost two years.

Paris Hilton’s Private Dinner Party

Paris Hilton’s Private Dinner Party

In Park City, Utah for the Sundance Film Festival, Paris Hilton made a grand arrival to her own private dinner party last night (January 19).

The heiress, who showed up at the Turning Leaf Lounge clad in a stunning sparkly blue dress, spoke briefly to press before joining her fellow guests for a night full of fun.

And the talk of the evening centered on the fact that Paris was wearing a huge diamond ring on her wedding finger, with an onlooker telling: “She was all smiles as she waved her rock at the waiting public and left smiling with a minder and friends.”

Hilton is in town to support “The Hottie and the Nottie,” a film she executive produced and stars in. And while the movie’s not in the Sundance lineup, the former Simple Life star is making sure to use the media buzz surrounding the festival in an effort to boost her flick’s notoriety.

According to the LA Times, “Regent Entertainment (coincidentally, also a Sundance sponsor) is having its “Nottie” party at the Bon Appetit Supper Club at The River Horse Cafe Sunday.  Word is Paris will also hit 50 Cent’s Sundance dinner and do a MySpace chat with him.”

How I Met Your Mother and The Unit renewed?

HIMYMWell, it looks like fans of How I Met Your Mother (me! me!) and The Unit (maybe my parents?) have some early good news ahead of CBS’s upfront, which is scheduled for tomorrow: The LA Times’ Show Tracker blog is reporting that both shows will be renewed (thanks to Greg for leaving a comment with the link last night).

The article talks more about HIMYM, of course, mentioning that Britney Spears’ first appearance gave the show the boost it needed to carry it to a fourth season. I wish that wasn’t true, but I’m pretty sure it is. As much as fans of HIMYM (me! me!) hated the distraction Brit Brit brought to the show, and really hated her wooden performance (especially last night, according to many of the commenters on my review of “Everything Must Go”), they have to admit that without the pop tart, the show might not have made it.

Sigh. Oh, well. Whatever gets the job done, right? I’ll see if I can confirm the renewal when I speak to Carter Bays and Craig Thomas later today.
