It’s not every day that you get a chance to ask a major Hollywood director questions face-to-face.  Well, you’re still not going to, but Shawn over at MTV is getting the chance to speak with future Hobbit director and Pan’s Labyrinth mastermind Guillermo Del Toro next week, and he wants you to submit questions for him to ask!

So, think of some real gems, and pop over HERE to submit your questions.

We just want to hear some casting news!  Come on, Guillermo… give us a hint?

Guillermo Del Toro to Never Direct Sleepless in Seattle Sequel?

We can all rest easy. Turns out all of those Internet rumors were true: Hellboy 2 director Guillermo del Toro is not a fan of weepy rom-coms and will never ever direct a movie starring Meg Ryan or rabid Manhattan cougars. Page Six got the scoop of scoops by way of an interview in Complex magazine…

“No way. Sleepless in Seattle can go fuck itself,” Guillermo Del Toro said. “Monsters are the most beautiful creatures in the universe. I have no interest in everyday life, except through a twisted mirror.”

Slashfilm tracked down Everyday Life in its mundane cubicle on Friday for a comment and this is what it had to say…

“Listen, I know I’m lame. If Guillermo has a problem with me, it’s understandable. Now, if you’ll excuse me, there’s only one Almond Joy left in the office snack machine, and I want snag it for later. Congratulations on the superlative mention in Vanity Fair by the way. [incoherent mumbling]“

So, we guess that settles it. Shocked? Wouldn’t it be cool to see the director of Pan’s Labyrinth redo You’ve Got Mail as a deranged horror fantasy?

Jennifer Connelly Explains Pain of Movie Role

Jennifer Connelly Explains Pain of Movie Role

We can all think of a moment in our favorite movie where the actor seemed so gripped with the scene that it feels like reality.  In a recent interview, Jennifer Connelly revealed that her most recent role in the just-released film “Reservation Road” was the toughest one she’s ever played.

The “Labyrinth” actress told press, “About a week into the movie, I thought, ‘What have I done? What have I let myself in for?’ I could feel it in my dreams, having a hard time sleeping, my jaw locking up—tension, physical strain. I couldn’t avoid those feelings, even if I wanted to leave this character on the set.”

In the movie, Connelly’s character loses a child in a hit-and-run accident.  And when it came time to get into character, she says her own life experience bled through.  “I felt almost superstitious in refusing to think about my own kids.  I have two sons. I refused to think about them. That said, of course it’s inevitable that you think about them when you’re making a movie about losing a child. I, I didn’t want to. But in some way, you just can’t help but have the performance be informed by the fact that you’re a mother yourself, wondering, fearing how you’d react to something this tragic.”

Jennifer is taking a much needed break from her tendency toward the serious role, though.  She’s filming “He’s Just Not That Into You” with Drew Barrymore and Jennifer Aniston.  And she’s loving it.  “I don’t know if I’m funny in it. That remains to be seen.  Am I the straight man or do I get to be funny? I can’t tell. Again, ‘remains to be seen.’ ”

Netflix’s First Set-Top Box

Roku Netflix

Netflix has released the first set top box which will allow you to live-stream movies to your television on demand. The first unit is produced by Roku for only $99, and all you need is a netflix subscription to use it. I think I’m more excited about this device than anyone else I know. It’s clearly the future of how we’re going to watch movies. And while the Roku box has a lot of things right: The price, HDMI output, standard video quality, Wifi connectivity, and easy set-up/installation, it is still appears to be an early product.

Netflix

remoteThe problems: Only 10,000 of the 100,000 DVDs are available for instant stream. That’s not to say there aren’t some great selections. Here is a sampling that Roku lists on their website:

For the most part it seems like classic catalog titles and recent independent/mini-major releases. There is probably enough to keep me going for years. Especially their television show selection. And the offered selection is always growing.

The biggest problem I have with the unit is that it doesn’t allow you to choose a movie directly from the set-top box. You need to first go to your netflix account on a computer and add the instant watch titles to your netflix queue. And apparently you can have over 500 titles in your instant watch queue to choose from while sitting on your couch. But having to first add the selections to your account on the website is one extra set which seems unnecessary. I wonder if they have to do this to get around On demand exclusivity deals.

But imagine the possibilities. Imagine having 50,000 movies and tv shows to choose from. Imagine when a big company like Apple or Sony makes a set-top box for the service, how much better the functionality could be. Basically, imagine being able to rent a netflix movie when you want, and watch it instantly from the comfort of your couch, for not one cent more than your standard netflix description. It’s going to happen, but this unit is clearly for the early adopter (a group I usually belong to). And for only $100, it’s not a huge investment.
