More presenters announced for the Tonys

Tony AwardCBS has secured even more celebrities to grace the stage at Radio City Music Hall next Sunday. Gabriel Byrne (In Treatment), Julie Chen (Big Brother), Harry Connick, Jr. (Will & Grace), Laurence Fishburne, Mandy Patinkin (Criminal Minds), David Hyde Pierce, Lily Tomlin and John Waters (Til Death Do Us Part) have been added as presenters. These actors and actresses (and, er, Julie Chen) will join an already stellar list of presenters and host Whoopi Goldberg.

I have to admit it. I’m getting a little excited for The Tonys. I usually find them boring. The performances are fantastic but the awards in between are a bit of a snore. However, this cast of presenters is intriguing. I’ll at least be flipping back and forth hoping to catch the performances and my favorite stars.

The 62nd Annual Tony Awards will be held on Sunday June 15th from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. ET on CBS.

Alchemist Finally Fuses Together

Laurence Fishburne

Two decades after Paulo Coelho's bestselling novel was published, it's finally headed for the big screen.

Producer extraordinaire Harvey Weinstein confirmed while making the Cannes Film Festival rounds that the Weinstein Co. would produce the adaptation, to star and be directed by Laurence Fishburne.

The book, which was released in 1988, sold 30 million copies and become a bestseller in 18 countries, chronicles the journey of Santiago, a Spanish shepherd boy, who heads off to Africa in search of treasure only to have his purpose altered after meeting an alchemist, to be played by Fishburne, along the way.

"This is a special project that now has a special team behind it to ensure that its path to the big screen is handled with the proper care it deserves," the actor said.

The film has been given a $60 million budget and will begin shooting next year around the globe, in Europe, the Middle East and north Africa.

It's already earned the seal of approval from the author himself.

"I am very happy that my book will be filmed in the way I intended it to be, and I hope the spirit and simplicity of my work will be preserved."

Tony Noms Reach Heights, Head South

The Great White Way is gonna paint the town red tonight.

In the Heights, a musical chronicling a group of immigrant dreamers in Manhattan's Washington Heights neighborhood, as backed by a salsa and hip-hop score, received a leading 13 nominations today for the 2008 Tony Awards.

Following close on its Capezio'd heels is Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific, the much-heralded first ever Broadway revival of the iconic musical, which earned 11 nods.

But Mel Brooks' latest foray, the hugely hyped yet hugely disappointing musical take on Young Frankenstein, failed to register in any of the major categories, aside from featured-acting nods for supporting players Andrea Martin and Christopher Fitzgerald.

A few big names also made the cut: Laurence Fishburne, Patrick Stewart, Rufus Sewell, Laurie Metcalf, Martha Plimpton, Mary McCormack, S. Epatha Merkerson, Tom S. Epatha Merkerson, Tom "Luke Duke" Wopat and Bobby Cannavale were all singled out with individual acting nominations for their work on the boards.

Rounding out the top musical nominees was Stephen Sondheim's equally iconic Sunday in the Park With George, which follows the life of impressionist painter Georges Seurat during the creation of his famous painting, which earned nine nominations.

The top nominated play, meanwhile, was the Pulitzer Prize-sanctioned August: Osage County, a snapshot of a Midwestern family returning home to care for their manipulative and afflicted mother.

The Tonys, currently in its 62nd year, will air live from Radio City Music Hall on CBS June 15. Whoopi Goldberg will host.
