American Cinematheque Honors Julia Roberts
American Cinematheque Honors Julia Roberts
We all love awards shows. Who’s wearing what? Who came with whom? But at the 22nd Annual American Cinematheque Award went to Julia Roberts last night, and it had more significance than the normal Oscar win.
The Erin Brockovich actress was presented the award by her Pelican Brief co-star Denzel Washington. Chairman Rick Nicita gave Roberts a hero’s introduction as he career in film was glorified.
“The American Cinematheque is extremely pleased to honor Julia Roberts at our celebration this year. Roberts is a true movie star who has delighted audiences and critics in so many pictures, from her first screen appearance in Mystic Pizza through mega-hits like Pretty Woman and Runaway Bride to her Academy Award-winning performance in Erin Brockovich and many, many more. Moviegoers are eagerly awaiting the next chapter in the career of this beloved actress and we are looking forward to thanking her for all that she’s already given us.”
Also in attendance was the elite of Hollywood, including Natalie Portman. The Darjeeling Limited actress wore a purple suede dress and looked radiant. All in all, it was a great night for American film.
30 Rock Dish: Five Minutes with Tina Fey

J.Go here. Last night at the NBC cocktail party, I rescued Tina Fey from behind a piano, brought her a Diet Coke and interviewed her. I can die now, but before I go, here’s what I picked up about season two of 30 Rock:
The Lemon-Donaghy Romance Begins Five Minutes After Never: Despite their intense chemistry, Tina says there’s no romance—nor any sex—in store for Liz Lemon and her boss, Jack Donaghy, played by Alec Baldwin. "No, never gonna happen. They have great chemistry, I think, but in the writers' room we always talk about it as Lou Grant and Mary Tyler Moore, or Han Solo and Princess Leia. Lot of chemistry, never happened."
Paging Mrs. Brady? Kenneth the Page, on the other hand, might get some action this season. "Kenneth the Page will have so many love affairs. Somebody pitched the idea of Kenneth the Page having an affair with Florence Henderson, which I think we should really try to make happen. She’s really funny."
Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down: Tracy Morgan’s real-life ankle bracelet could very well make an appearance this season on 30 Rock. Tina tells me, "Tracy’s been saying that, and I’m like, Okay! We'll see. Don’t have any big plans for it yet, but maybe…" Send your ankle-bracelet story ideas to, uh, 30 Rockefeller Plaza.
Begin at the Beginning: It’s early yet, but the writing staff is hard at work. There are no complete scripts, but according to Tina, "We’ve broken a lot of stories, and then I get in there with the writers next week."
Slice Girls: Says Tina of possible story beats for the coming season, "We've talked about Jenna, Jane Krakowski’s character, coming back from summer hiatus having gained like, 30 pounds, because she spent her summer doing Mystic Pizza: The Musical, and she had to eat two whole pizzas a day. So, we might have her struggling with that as a small arc in the beginning. Jane, of course, is in fantastic shape. I talked to Jane about it last year, and she was totally into it."
Annabeth Gish Biography

As a juvenile actress, Gish gave a fine performance as a young girl caught between bomb testings and family feuds in the 1986 “sleeper” hit, “Desert Bloom”. She then played Julia Roberts’ sister in “Mystic Pizza” (1988) before taking time to earn a BA from Duke University. When she returned to Hollywood, she was a young leading lady with a porcelain complexion and winning smile.
Gish made “Desert Bloom” when she was 13, and, while still a teen, she portrayed the high school girl whom Jon Cryer, on the run from mobsters, romances in “Hiding Out” (1987). Since returning to films, Gish played the first wife of the young “Wyatt Earp” (1994), Julie Nixon in Oliver Stone’s “Nixon” (1995) and was in the ensemble casts of “Beautiful Girls” and “The Last Supper” (both 1996). In the former, she was Timothy Hutton’s girlfriend, a high-powered Manhattan attorney, while in the latter she was an idealistic left-wing student who joins others in killing right-wingers.
Her TV debut was in the 1986 ABC TV-movie “Hero in the Family”. Gish had her first lead in “When He’s Not a Stranger” (CBS, 1989) as a college freshman victimized by acquaintance rape and a college administration that wishes to make the incident disappear. In “Silent Cries” (NBC, 1993), she delivered a gritty portrayal of a young woman interned by the Japanese during World War II, while in the miniseries “Scarlett” (CBS, 1994) she was Anne Hampton, the wife Rhett Butler takes after his divorce from Scarlett O’Hara in the sequel to “Gone With the Wind”. Gish made her TV series debut in the 1995 CBS effort “Courthouse” as a young lawyer assigned to the sex crimes unit despite her discomfort with the area. Six years later, she joined the cast of Fox’s long-running “The X-Files” playing Agent Reyes.
