Lost: What was written on the secret door?

Secret Door #2Easter eggs are part of the fun of watching Lost. Symbols, numbers, and names can all have multiple meanings and connections to the story. Repeat viewing is a must for the detail-oriented fan. Doors have become particularly significant sources of information on the show. Season Two’s blast door map revealed the names and locations of several DHARMA stations on the island. This week’s episode brought another door into the Lost mythology.

Leave it to Ben to have a secret room next to another secret room. We already saw the secret room filled with passports, foreign currency, and suits. After a dramatic confrontation with Keamy and the mercenaries, Ben went to another hidden room and did something that fans are still talking about. I’ll save the details about second room’s door, and what was written on it, for after the jump. Spoiler Warning: Stop reading if you haven’t seen “The Shape of Things to Come.”

The inquisitive minds at DocArzt’s Lost blog recently decoded the hieroglyphs on the door. Symbols for summon, power/protection, time, master/priest, life, and stone container were visible. Their initial translation is “to summon protection,” but they leave room for other interpretations. “Time to summon strength” is a possibility, as is “time summons the power of life.”

The first translation makes the most sense to me. When Ben emerged from the secret room, the Black Smoke Monster appeared. It was strongly implied that Ben chose to sic the monster on the mercenaries that killed his daughter. I’m wondering if this room also holds the island’s other capabilities, like healing and the “magic box” (the power to bring what you desire to the island). I know that there isn’t an actual box, but this power could be centered in that room (”the power of life”).

What do you think of these translations?

Hey, that X-Files movie now has a title

The X-Files: I Want To BelieveWe told you last week about the new X-Files DVD set and how the episodes on the set might give a clue as to what the new big screen movie will be about. Now we have another clue, sorta: the movie has a title.

Creator and producer Chris Carter has announced that the title of the movie is The X-Files: I Want To Believe. That’s a perfect title! As fans of the show know, this was pretty much Agent Mulder’s mantra and the caption on a famous poster that he kept on the wall in his office (on the right is a scene from the new movie). The first X-Files movie was titled The X-Files: Fight The Future.

A question for fans of the show: are you excited by this movie or do you think it has been too long (10 years) since the last movie and any interest you had in the show has gone away? I’m actually excited about it. The characters still hold my interest and it will be good to see them again. Now, that excitement I have might go away if I hear the film doesn’t even address the alien mythology storyline from the show at all. That would be a kick in the head to loyal fans.

Kyle XY: First Cut Is The Deepest

Kyle XY
(S02E19) “The human body has its own built-in repair kit.” - Kyle

This week’s episode put the wheels in motion for a finale that will surely have us finally coming face-to-face with Sarah. I don’t buy that she’s dead. If Adam can heal himself, surely Sarah could too and probably better and faster than he could. Plus, the episode was way too Sarah-heavy not to mention her again in the four upcoming episodes of the season.

Kyle XYAfter a few somewhat-filler episodes, it was great to get one that pushed the show’s mythology a bit further. We didn’t get earth-shattering answers but we did get a better glimpse at who Sarah is/was and what Jessi can do. We know that Sarah Emerson was involved in the school’s paper, won various prizes, was accused of sabotaging a Biochem final by writing the answers and vandalizing a lecture hall. She is such a legend for the students that there is a trophy case dedicated to her in the university’s bar.

As if we needed it, we got another glimpse at how much Jessi is similar to Sarah. That glimpse was not a pretty one. “My mother was awesome,” she said after seeing the Latnok symbol on the ceiling, a defying and frowned-upon act. Jessi is so driven that she is on a self-destructive path. Brian is pushing her a lot but Jessi is pushing herself even further and for what? She intentionally sabotaged the pool competition to come out on top. Her lack of social skills and empathy prevents her from seeing the bad side of what she did to Kyle when moving the balls. In fact, she is also hurting herself and it’ll be a hard fall when reality hits her.

Kyle XYKyle and Jessi can heal themselves and, as it is implied by the final scene, maybe others. With this superpower also comes a dark side and Jessi is the living proof. Now that she can heal herself, you can bet that she’ll be bolder and crazier than ever; it won’t just be jumping off the school’s roof! Kyle better learn how to heal himself faster because I have a hunch that he may need to face off Jessi once again.

Speaking of Kyle’s newfound healing powers, did he or did he not heal Andy? Since fans respond well to the couple that are Josh and Andy, I believe that he did. Let your voice be heard in our poll below.

I said it last week and I’ll say it again. Mark and Lori will so end up together. In that review, I mentioned how the actor was not how I envisioned the character and that his performance was poor. I must say that this week’s episode reconciled me with Mark a bit. The actor clearly is not totally comfortable with the character yet but he did show improvement between the two episodes so I’m willing to give him a few episodes to get settled in. Mark does have great lines to throw back at Lori and I enjoy seeing them fight with words a lot!

If you recall the reviews I wrote last summer, I was questioning Declan’s usefulness to the series. He was moping around and provided nothing to the storylines. I’m afraid this is the case once again. Even if he is in a good mood and says a few wise cracks, Declan doesn’t have much to do other than drive the girls around. Now that Mark entered the picture, Declan has served his purpose with Lori. Plus now that the Tragers know the truth about Kyle, Declan doesn’t have to protect and help XY anymore. I think it’s time Declan moves to another town.

ABC launches Lost webisodes (and they suck)

lostABC has launched the first of 13 web-only, mini episodes for Lost. The webisodes are about two minutes long and feature the major characters from Lost. They’re called Missing Pieces and are meant to fill in extra information about characters and hint at the overall mythology of the island. The first episode of the series is called “The Watch” and it features Jack and his father.

And, oh my God, it is awful.

What a waste of time. The webisode is a seemingly meaningless exchange between Jack and his father before Jack’s wedding to Sarah. Jack’s dad gives him a watch. And it takes two and a half minutes to do it. Plus, the dialogue is very poor. For instance, Jack says, “Dad, are you trying to tell me something?” And, I could be wrong, but I think Matthew Fox isn’t too thrilled about the webisode because he seems to be phoning it in.

The ’About’ page on Missing Pieces says that the webisodes will either be a little background on major characters or have some sort of significance to the mystery of the island. The page says, “For each story, we leave it up to the fans to figure out where these pieces fit into the overall mythology.” Puh-lease. Is anybody else tired of being jerked around by this show?
