Sam Rockwell and Jemaine Clement Sign On For Jared Hess’s Gentlemen Broncos

The actor with the best perma-squint in showbiz, Choke’s Sam Rockwell, has just signed on, alongside Flight of the Conchords Jemaine Clement and youngster Michael Angarano, to star in director Jared Hess’s comedy Gentlemen Broncos. Angarano will play a teen attending a writer’s convention (what fun those are) where he discovers that his idea has been stolen by a “legendary fantasy novelist” played by Clement. Rockwell should have a field day as he plays the title character (what an odd name) in both the kid’s and novelist’s stories.
Hess, who previously directed Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, wrote the script with his wife, Jerusha Hess, and I like the log line, sounds write up his alley. Oh yeah, to the guy who bemoans when I don’t mention this, that would make Hess, ahem, a writer-director. The film is set for release in 2009.
Not sure why, but I’m in the mood to see a comedy about a fantasy novelist, and Clement, whose face is quite devilish and elastic, is a bit of inspired casting. Movies that literally play with literary structure are always interesting, whether it’s terrible (The Number 23) or mildly amusing (John Candy’s Delirious). Anyone got another flick that fits this category? Discuss below.

Jared Hess Returns With Gentlemen Broncos

Jared Hess broke onto the scene with a small indie comedy at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. Napoleon Dynamite quickly took over the world, becoming one of the biggest cult blockbusters of all time. Jess followed the film up with Nacho Libre, which sounded like a sure thing - Jack Black as a masked Mexican wrestler. I know the film is popular around kids, but it registered as a huge disappointment to most of the high school and college crowd.
Well Hess is returning to Fox Searchlight, where it all began, to direct a script he again co-wrote with his wife and writing partner Jerusha Hess titled Gentlemen Broncos. The idea sounds like a true return to form, or at least promises a return to form. Broncos follows a high school outcast who’s an aspiring fantasy author, who attends a fantasy convention and discovers that his supposed masterpiece “Yeast Lords” was ripped off by legendary novelist Ronald Chevalier, who has in recent years turned desperate for ideas.
No word yet on casting, but the idea sounds very promising to me. Filming is scheduled to take place next March in Hess’ home state of Utah.

Jack Black to star in Edgar Wright’s THEM?

While interviewing screenwriter turned director Mike White (Chuck & Buck, School of Rock, Nacho Libre) about his new movie Year of the Dog, we were able to briefly talk about his upcoming collaboration with Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright:
“I’m writing a script with him [Edgar] now. It’s like a conspiracy theory comedy horror movie. It’s a little bit out of my wheel house and a little bit more in his wheel house. I loved Shaun of the Dead and we talked about writing something together, so once our movies are finally out there and put to bed, we’re going to get together and hopefully bang it out.”
We asked White when he would work with Jack again, and this is when things got a little interesting:
“This thing with Edgar may very well involve Jack [Black]. Yeah, I would like to keep doing stuff with Jack, he’s a good friend of mine.”
Jack Black to star in Edgar Wright’s Them? What about the Shaun of the Dead guys, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost? What must they think? We asked them.
“If he’s going to bring his bitches, you should bring yours,” Simon Pegg commented to Wright.
Nick Frost added: “Jack and I will wrestle and we’ll see who wins.”
When we pressed Edgar about the Black casting rumor, and he responded:
“It’s early days, but I’m sure if it happens, Jack will be involved.”
And what’s THEM about?
“It’s based on the Jon Ronson book,” explained Wright. “I’m not sure if you’ve read the book but it’s a nonfiction extremists and wild conspiracy theories. And the idea is to set the film in a world where some of these things exist.”
Year of the Dog hits theaters on April 13th 2007. Hot Fuzz hits theaters on April 20th 2007.
