Child’s Play Remake
Any who had a MyBuddy when they were a child, was terrified of the Chucky films (Yes, even though at times the animatronics were rather lame). But I think even most Horror fans lost interest in the series before The Seed of Chucky was even conceived.
My friend Alex at FirstShowing was at the Martian Child junket where producer David Kirschner revealed that they are working on a all-out remake of the first Chucky movie, Child’s Play. The film has not yet been given the greenlight, in fact, it’s just being written now (by Child’s Play screenwriter Don Mancini), but Kirschner promised that it would definitely be “more terrifying” than the previous films. No director is attached.
If this Child’s Play remake does get off the ground, it will be interesting to see if they use anamatronic puppets or a computer generated Chucky. My suggestion is that they use a mix, using the CG mostly for the action sequences. The Chucky movies kind of became a parody of themselves, and I’m not sure if anyone from the new generation actually takes them seriously. So I’m curious to see how people may react to a more horror/thriller orientated remake. But the real question is: should they even be making a remake at all? Rob Zombie’s Halloween was bashed by most fans and newcomers because while it did add some back-story to the Michael Myers character, it also took away from his mysteriousness.
Darren Aronofsky to direct The Wrestler
Last week we told you that Nicolas Cage was in talks to star in Robert Siegel’s The Wrestler, which is in development at Darren Aronofsky’s Protozoa Pictures. ComingSoon is now reporting that Aronofsky is actually going to direct this film, which is targeted for a January 2008 start.
I had actually heard that Aronofsky’s The Fighter is scheduled to go into production early next year. So it’s likely that Aronofsky will film the movies back-to-back. The big Hollywood strike was the best thing to happen to Aronofsky, who is coming off a box office failure with The Fountain (which to be fair, was one of the best movies of last year, but a hard film to market). Aronofsky is one of the best visual directors of this new generation of filmmakers.
The Wrestler follows a 1980s-era pro wrestling star named Randy “The Ram” Robinson who has become a burnt-out shell of his former self. Ram has a heart attack in a small-time match, and his doctor warns him that if he ever fights again, he would be risking his own life. In an effort to build a new life, Robinson takes a job at a deli, moves in with an aging stripper and tries to build a relationship with her son. But the prospect of a rematch with his old nemesis the Ayatollah proves too tempting to resist, even if it means risking his life.
Hellraiser Remake Finds Directors
French filmmakers Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo have been brought on to write and direct a Hellraiser remake for Dimension Films. The French duo just made a film called Inside, which AintItCool calls “one of the goriest and unflinchingly intense horror films that screened at FANTASTIC FEST.”
The filmmakers say they have the blessing of Clive Barker (who directed the original based on his acclaimed novella The Hellbound Heart) to reappropriate his story and also had a playful message to any horror fans that were ready to trash the idea of a remake, “No tears, please; it’s a waste of good remaking!”
I think Hellraiser is ripe for a remake. I know as a child, I was always scared of pinhead, and the prospect of the franchise scaring a whole new generation of children kind of excites me. However, it should also be noted that Dimension was the studio behind Rob Zombie’s Halloween, which many agree should have never happened. Let’s hope this turns out better.

Would You Watch a Goonies Animated Sequel?
MTV. “It’s a film Spielberg very badly wanted to make [and] Richard Donner very badly wanted to make. All of us [the cast] really, really wanted to do it. It’s come to the point of the script got ordered, and then the ball got dropped. For whatever reason, Warner Bros. doesn’t see it as a profitable venture. It’s a very sad, unfortunate story. But they just decided to make ‘Lost Boys 2′ after 20 years. Anything’s possible!”
“Right now they are talking about the idea of doing it as an animated series,” Feldman revealed, without offering more details. Corey also spoke highly of one of the last Goonie 2 script attempts:
“The one that I heard that worked the best was all of us were now grown up, and have [our own] kids. And those kids get into some trouble and end up stumbling across some link to our past. They discover who we really are and what we went through. And, simultaneously, the Fratelli brothers find out that the kids have found out – so they’re out to get the kids and the kids are out to save their lives and their families.”
Corey also revealed that in one script he was a Vegas lounge singer, and in another, a trial lawyer.
The Goonies is one of those movies from my childhood that I hold very close to my heart. And usually with such movies, I find myself feeling uneasy when the idea of a proposed sequel comes up. I man, most sequels are usually not as good. And who wants your childhood memories ruined by a bad attempt to claim more money from a long lost franchise. But for some reason I think there could be a good idea for a Goonies sequel. And I believe that a new Goonies movie could live on for a whole new generation. May-be I’m just being overly optimistic (which is out of character for me), but I’d like to see the idea explored more. As for a cartoon, in concept maybe it would be fun, but what audience would they target the project towards? It seems very speculative to me.
