Emily the Strange - The First Movie Adapted From a Sticker?

Emily The Strange

Emily the Strange was created by Santa Cruz skateboarder Rob Reger in the early 1990’s to help promote his company Cosmic Debris Etc. Inc. Before becoming a cult counterculture icon, Emily began on a sticker that was passed out for free at concerts, record stores and skate shops to help promote Cosmic Debris. I give you this back story because I think it’s very important to establish that Emily The Strange will be the first movie ever to be adapted from a sticker. And I remember a few years back when people thought it was strange that DreamWorks was making a movie out of a line of action figures.

The character is a goth looking 13-year old girl who is usually accompanied by her four black cats: Sabbath - the troublemaker, Nee-Chee - the schemer, Miles - the creative, and Mystery, the leader of the group. The franchise has a considerable merchandising catalog, including clothing, stationery, stickers, and accessories, very popular with the Hot Topic crowd.

Dark Horse Entertainment president Mike Richardson will produce the film, which is currently on the hunt for a director. Richardson says that the filmmaker choice may in turn dictate what format will serve the story best: live-action, animation, or a combination of both. I can’t really imagine Emily the Strange as a live-action movie. May-be they could do a mixture using the Sin City approach. The story is said to be based on one of the four Emily the Strange young adult novels, which will be published next year by HarperCollins. Not much is known other than it will offer up some backstory on the character, and will feature her four cats.

The project is also not yet set-up at a studio. Universal, who is producing the comic book company’s Hellboy series, has a first-look deal.

Miley Cyrus vs. Vanity Fair

Miley CyrusMiley Cyrus has released a statement regarding the controversial new pictures of her in Vanity Fair. According to a report from E!: “I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be ’artistic’ and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed,” she says. “I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about.’”

In the pictures, taken by Annie Leibovitz, 15 year old Miley appears to be topless, covered by a blanket. Now hackles are raised in all corners. Vanity Fair insists that Miley’s parents were on set and approved of the photos. Other sources say her parents left before those shots were taken. Disney weighs in saying Miley was manipulated in order to sell magazines. And the voice of reason, oddly enough me in this case, would like to add, “Who the hell takes topless, or implied topless, pictures of a 15 year old girl in the first place?” Right? Shouldn’t the whole thing have been avoided with basic common sense?

AI OD: A farewell to Ramiele Malubay

Ramiele MalubayIn Ramiele Malubay’s exit interview, she said that she saw her elimination from American Idol coming. She also said that nerves were definitely getting the better of her, along with a combination of early praise going to her head. At least she’s not running around blaming everything from the judges to her placement on the show. Here’s a twenty-year old girl who’s basically coming right out and saying “You know what, I blew it.” Just not in those words.

She plans to become roommates with her new BFF Danny Noriega, whenever he gets done cruising the world with Rosie O’Donnell and she gets done touring this summer, I guess. Ramiele is an incredibly talented girl with a cute personality and tiny little frame. With the proper marketing team behind her, and obviously a manager to help her find herself as a singer, she could really make something of herself.

She’s well aware of the success former Idol contestant, and fellow Filipino, Jasmine Trias has had in the Philippines, and intends to follow that route as well. But she also wants to finish college and perhaps pursue acting. Honestly, Ramiele? Acting? You’re going to have to come a helluva lot more out of that shyness shell of yours if you want to pull off acting. Look how far Britney had to go just to get a bit role on How I Met Your Mother. Okay, maybe that’s an extreme example.

There’s really no point in analyzing Ramiele’s individual performances. She started off strong, with passion and conviction in her performances. Then week after week she put on empty performances of bad song choices and lost more and more of that momentum she’d started with until it finally sputtered out and she was gone.

During Ramiele’s elimination, the oddest thing was the amazing size differential between Ramiele and the amazonian duo of Brooke White and Kristy Lee Cook. Ramiele’s cute personality shone a bit in this sequence as well. Oh, and who can forget the awkwardness of her face to the bosom hug with Kristy when she was cut. You could tell Ryan wanted to just pull her right out of that cleavage. “This is a family show, young lady!”:

Ramiele Top 10 “Alone” (studio version dubbed). Okay, I have to interject here. Someone took the studio recorded version of Heart’s “Alone” that Ramiele did and dubbed it over the footage of her live performance. The vocals on this are absolutely amazing. Maybe Ramiele is one of those singers who just sounds way better in a studio than she does live?:

Ramiele in Hollywood. What happened to this girl? She was so amazing!:

Ramiele’s initial audition where she just blew the competition away. Consider this. Jasmine Trias was a good but certainly not an amazing singer. Ramiele can out-sing her any second of any day. And yet, Jasmin managed a third place finish. Is the talent that much stronger this year, or did Ramiele really blow it that badly? My money’s on the latter, though the talent is strong.:

The Lovely Bones Delayed?

The Lovely Bones

Yesterday word leaked onto the interwebs that Peter Jackson and one of his art directors have been supposedly duking it out over the depiction of heaven in The Lovely Bones. The film tells the story of a 14-year-old girl, raped, murdered, and dismembered by a neighbor, who watches from a personalized heaven as her family and friends deal with their grief. So it’s obviously a huge portion of the film. Now our friends at BadandUgly are reporting that the film has been pushed back from it’s announced March 13th release date until a FALL 2009 TBA slot. It looks like the situation might be actually worse than we first believed.
