Appreciation: The Ditziest Greaser
Dody Goodman specialized in comedy. As anyone who saw her muck up Principal McGee’s class schedules in Grease probably surmised.
Goodman’s career dated back to Broadway in the 1940s. For all her creditsnotably, she was an Emmy-nominated performer on Jack Paar’s Tonight Show, and a Fernwood, Ohio, elder in the 1970s cult sitcom Mary Hartman, Mary HartmanGoodman was arguably best known for one word: Grease.
Goodman played Blanche, the scattered front-office assistant, to Eve Arden’s iron-willed Rydell High ruler in the popular 1978 movie musical. The mismatched pair returned for the less-popular 1982 sequel, Grease 2. Arden died in 1990. Goodman kept on, even taking a whirl in the Broadway revival of Grease! in the 1990s.
She was 93 when she died last Sunday at a hospital in New Jersey. Fortunately, Blanche’s smudges are indelible.
Other recently noted passings:
- Kermit Love, 91, was the costume designer from the world of ballet who made Big Bird a big, yellow bird, literally. He also helped create the Sesame Street costumes for Oscar the Grouch and Cookie Monster.
- Howard Brandy, 79, was a “strong-jawed” publicist, as Variety put it, who was known to cartoon fans, even if they didn’t know it, as the model for the strong-jawed Dudley Do-Right.
- William Vince, 44, produced Capote, and per Canada.com, was the first person thanked in star Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Oscar-night acceptance speech. Recently, Vince worked on The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, the star-crossed Terry Gilliam fantasy that will go down as Heath Ledger’s final film.

Tinseltown Preps For 2008 Academy Awards
It’s the Friday before the Academy Awards and Hollywood is abuzz with celebrities, stylists, and fans counting down the minutes until it’s Oscar time.
Considered to be the Holy Grail of awards shows, the Academy Awards have more pomp and circumstance than any other event of the kind. And stars like Denzel Washington and Hilary Swank have been spotted this week rehearsing their lines and preparing for the big night.
One of the hallmarks of Oscar night is the red carpet arrival. And for Hollywood’s elite, their look is just as important as whether or not they go home with a trophy.
Anticipating their clients’ needs, celebrity stylists are running all over town trying to ensure the best selection of accessories and outfits. After all, A-listers have to show up at the Kodak Theatre looking their best.
Beverly Hills jeweler Neil Lane talked about the popular practice of stars borrowing jewelry for events such as the Oscars. “A star could not buy enough jewelry to accessorize every red carpet she does. Now because everything is a fashion statement, everything is an accessory to be looked at. Every detail is looked at. If she wore that (piece) last time, she’d get ridiculed.”
We’ll have full coverage of everything from the red carpet arrivals to the last award to the after parties, so stay glued to the for everything Oscar.

It’s finally here… the biggest night of the year for the movie industry. And Oscar night is most certainly not leaving anything to be desired.
As the red carpet arrivals got underway, Marion Cotillard made a grand entrance wearing a stunning white fishscale gown.
With this kind of paparazzi attention, you gotta wonder how the French actress can see past the flashbulbs and make her way to the entrance.
One thing’s for sure. If the arrivals are any indication of how this night’s gonna go, we’re all in for a real treat.
