Rate-a-Trailer: Depp, Loathing & Gonzo

What do Johnny Depp, President Jimmy Carter and Pat Buchanan have in common? They all have big things to say about the late journalist-genius-gun nut Hunter S. Thompson in this new trailer from the documentary Gonzo, that’s what.

Depp was buddy-buddy with Thompson, and played him to shiny-domed perfection in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, so it’s no surprise he’s the first face we see here. But what do you think: Can director Alex Gibney (Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room) help the ’70s icon make yet another comeback, or is this one Depp flick you’ll skip?

The big new toy: America’s Next Top Model dolls

America’s Next Top Model dollsThere are many TV shows that are a natural when it comes to making dolls and action figures for them: Lost, Heroes, Star Trek. Maybe even those bobbleheads of Dwight from The Office. But dolls for America’s Next Top Model? That makes as much sense as a line of dolls for The McLaughlin Group (”I’ll trade you my Pat Buchanan for the Eleanor Clift!”), but they’re here, and they’re scary.

I think this is going to screw up kids even more, as if image and weight problems aren’t already a problem with girls approaching their teen years. I’m terrible at math so I can’t really figure out what those dimensions mean, but something tells me the waist size on these dolls wouldn’t make sense in the real world. Not that the world of modeling is the “real world.” Just look at the names of these dolls: Paisley, Sienna, Sidney, and Tascha. Are those the names of people or colors for a new clothing line this spring? Remember when George dated a girl named Sienna and Jerry said, “yeah, he’s dating a crayon.”

But it’s good to see that little girls around the world can now have the world of anorexia, bulimia and bitchiness in their own households twenty-four hours a day!

MSNBC’s David Shuster is not having a good week - VIDEO

MSNBC correspondent and anchor David Shuster finds himself in not one but two controversies today.

First, while filling in for Tucker Carlson yesterday, Shuster made the comment “Doesn’t it seem like Chelsea’s sort of being pimped out in some weird sort of way?” referring to Chelsea Clinton’s campaigning for her mother Hillary and making phone calls to superdelegates and The View. Well, Democratic officials (and MSNBC execs) aren’t happy with the remark, and have threatened to pull out of the February 26 MSNBC debate. Shuster apologized this morning and also plans to go back on Carlson’s show today to apologize again. (Update: Shuster has been suspended for his comment!)

But that’s not the only controversy Shuster is in the middle of this week…

This morning he was filling in for Joe Scarborough on Morning Joe while Scarborough was on vacation, and during a call from Scarborough to talk about the election with Shuster, Pat Buchanan, and Mika Brzezinski, Scarborough got Morning Mad at Shuster for cutting him off after an answer. Now, they tried to laugh it off, but you could tell from Scarborough’s tone and Shuster’s reaction that it was really tense and not fake-tense. Scarborough reminded Shuster that the only reason why he’s filling in for him is because he let him. Ouch.

The Huffington Post has the first comment and the apology, while the Morning Joe footage is below [via TV Newser].
