Stump the King - Tales from the Crypt
You guys did awesome last week coming up with Action. See if you can help out on this one…
Debbie Knight asks.
“Hi, I’m hoping someone will be able to help me. I’m a huge fan of horror TV Sitcoms…ie Tales from the Darkside, Tales from the Crypt etc…However I’m remembering an episode and can’t think where it’s from. I’ll describe it and hopefully someone here can give me a title and hopefully somewhere where i can watch it. The episode a female Dr. received a severed hand from the police that was from a serial killer who strangled his victims. It was explained to her that the hand seems to still move. As the episode continues murders are being committed in the same fashion as the serial killer. However the end of the episode, her and her boyfriend/husband Dr. are at home he goes in the tub she’s waiting for him in bed reading. Well the hand reattaches itself to this decomposing body and the boyfriend Dr. is killed .”
While I am not a huge fan of the type of show Debbie is asking about, I did always enjoy Tales from the Crypt.
What made Crypt so great is that the stories were taken directly from the old comic books, so they were especially creepy. The other important part was, of course, the casting. Brett Cullen, Lance Henriksen, Teri Hatcher, Don Rickles, Bruno Kirby, Michael J. Fox and Tim Roth are just a few of the familiar faces from the show.
Here is this week’s question…
On what TV show did I, Paul Goebel, work with the Crypt Keeper, John Kassir?
Congratulations Joe! Boston Common is the correct answer.
Reasons why I think ABC should renew Miss Guided

TV Squadder Paul Goebel reviewed the series premiere of the ABC comedy Miss Guided. He wasn’t sure what to make of the show after the first airing and I must admit that I also had my doubts about this new comedy. Judy Greer is a joy to watch as guidance counselor Becky Freeley but the comedy was predictable and the cast way too beautiful to portray a real high school. However, I decided to stick with it and ended up enjoying the show’s storylines and characters as well as the interview-like tidbits.
The series aired its season finale last week and is now awaiting ABC’s upfronts to know if it’ll come back next season or have to close the books. To help ABC make its decision, here are some reasons why Miss Guided should be renewed.
- Judy Greer is a delight and needs to stay on TV. Even though I had seen her in movies or on TV before 2003, I really noticed Greer’s comedic skills when she played Kitty Sanchez on FOX’s Arrested Development. Back then, I knew that she needed to get a bigger role on TV and MG offered her (and us) just that. Greer is believable as geeky Becky and I find myself rooting for the character (maybe also because I see myself a little bit in the character). Let’s hope that if MG is canceled that another comedy snatches her.
- Brooke Burns needs to be on a successful show. The actress is starting to suffer from what I call “The Eric Balfour Curse” (it could also be called “The Tim Daly Curse”): starring as a lead on many, many TV series that were never renewed (Balfour was cast as a lead on Veritas: The Quest, Hawaii, Sex, Love & Secrets, Conviction, and Fearless, which wasn’t even picked up). In the past years, Burns starred in North Shore and Pepper Dennis, both of which were not renewed for a second season. Her case is not a desperate one yet but if Miss Guided is not renewed, I’m afraid casting directors will start thinking twice before casting her in a lead role. Even if Burns is way too hot (I can admit it even if I’m a woman) to be a believable English teacher, the actress offers a good performance as Lisa Germain. And since some MG viewers are rooting for Lisa instead of Becky, they deserve to see her try to officially win over Tim’s heart.
- Miss Guided would be a great show to pair up with Samantha Who? Let’s face it, both are light comedies, both are aiming for a female viewership, both star funny ladies put in awkward situations. So why not pair them up on Monday nights when Dancing with the Stars is on hiatus to try to counterattack CBS’s comedy lineup?
If you missed the series and want to give this cutesy series a try, ABC offers all episodes of the series to watch online (only available to U.S. residents). ABC is set to present its 2008-2009 schedule on May 13.
Medium: Ladykiller - VIDEO
(S04E11) “What are kids for, if not to be used as excuses to get out of things you don’t want to do?” - Joe Dubois (as well as Paul Goebel)
Forty may, indeed, be the new thirty but considering Rosanna Arquette is a year away from being fifty, they could have done a little more to make her look better. I always thought she was hot but seeing her in that first scene made me want to watch The Executioner’s Song just so I can relive those good old days.
It’s about time, Manny came to his senses and stopped trying to deny that Alison was a huge help to him as the D.A. The truth is, there are plenty of voters who would actually be thrilled to know that the Phoenix police are using any method they can to put away criminals and, as we’ve seen, Alison gets results.
When my kids were little, I was always amazed at how often they and other kids suffered from ear infections. Moreover, I wondered why more adults don’t get them. I’m sure there is a reason for it but the truth is, while it’s happening, all you care about is getting the medicine that will make your child stop crying. Funny how that works. The scene in the car was another great example of how true and grounded the characters are.
When this season started, it seemed like Alison was only getting visions in her dreams, which I found annoying. Recently, however, she’s been visited by ghosts and tonight, she even got a vision when shaking the hand of Manny’s friend. I love that stuff. Maybe it’s because Alison Dubois is a real person or maybe because so many other shows get it wrong but whatever the reason is, I really appreciate the attention to detail that is written into these episodes. It makes for a more interesting story without getting away from what makes the characters fun to watch in the first place.
When watching a show like Medium, I always try and figure out the ending and, in many cases, I do. It’s not a big deal, watching years and years of television will have that affect, so I rarely mention it. However, in a case like this, when I have no idea what is going to happen, I have to give mad props to the writers, I didn’t see the book thing coming at all and as far as the Devalos supporter subplot, I was completely in the dark. I was a little disappointed that Scanlon had to go and make a joke about the bartender getting “nailed,” if only because it meant that I couldn’t.
When Devalos faced his buddy with the truth, it was like seeing an old friend. The only difference is that now he has accepted that Alison is an integral part of what he does and is partly responsible for his success. Let’s hope he remembers that when he gets back in the D.A’s office.
When Scanlon was speaking to the girls in the office, I got the feeling that there was going to be a twist but my favorite part was how cool the detective was when it became obvious who was doing the killing. He just stood there, smirked and let himself be picked up. I can only assume that when they got to the lobby, he whipped out his cuffs and took the guy away. I also found it funny that Joe got an ear infection, all things considered.
