Surfwise Movie Trailer

I dare you to watch the trailer for Surfwise and not find yourself intrigued. As of late, there have been quite a few surfing documentaries that are all mashed together in the head of pop culture, but this one, from director Doug Pray (memorable grunge doc Hype!) focuses on the intricacies of an eccentric familial bond. In true American daydream style, Doc Paskowitz ditched the medical profession in the 1950s to become a professional surfer and family man, eventually packing up his nine offspring into a 24-foot camper like road/life-schooled sardines, alongside his perma-preggo wife, and traveling from surf spot to surf spot for the duration of their childhoods.

The trailer ebbs with just enough hints at the family’s psychological aftermath(s)-admirable, cool, a dash depressing-to see why the film has received wide acclaim from critics and festival-goers thus far.

Surfwise just opened in limited release at the IFC Center in Manhattan, so Netflix it in advance if you’re elsewhere.

Sam Rockwell and Jemaine Clement Sign On For Jared Hess’s Gentlemen Broncos

rock.jpg

The actor with the best perma-squint in showbiz, Choke’s Sam Rockwell, has just signed on, alongside Flight of the Conchords Jemaine Clement and youngster Michael Angarano, to star in director Jared Hess’s comedy Gentlemen Broncos. Angarano will play a teen attending a writer’s convention (what fun those are) where he discovers that his idea has been stolen by a “legendary fantasy novelist” played by Clement. Rockwell should have a field day as he plays the title character (what an odd name) in both the kid’s and novelist’s stories.

Hess, who previously directed Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, wrote the script with his wife, Jerusha Hess, and I like the log line, sounds write up his alley. Oh yeah, to the guy who bemoans when I don’t mention this, that would make Hess, ahem, a writer-director. The film is set for release in 2009.

Not sure why, but I’m in the mood to see a comedy about a fantasy novelist, and Clement, whose face is quite devilish and elastic, is a bit of inspired casting. Movies that literally play with literary structure are always interesting, whether it’s terrible (The Number 23) or mildly amusing (John Candy’s Delirious). Vanessa Hudgens Bounces Back

Vanessa Hudgens Bounces Back

After what must have been the most embarrassing single incident of her life, Vanessa Hudgens appears to have fully bounced back just two weeks after her nude photo scandal.

The perma-smiling actress was spotted at The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf in Santa Monica yesterday.  And as a fun turning the tables trick, she pointed a camera at the paparazzi that were clamoring to get a shot of her.

Later that afternoon, the High School Musical hottie made a quick stop at a Hollywood studio for a photo shoot.  She’s looking vibrant and back to normal, according to witnesses.

Hudgens has been given a boost by Ugly Betty star Vanessa Williams, who, herself had to deal with a nude photo scandal that ended up costing her the Miss America crown back in 1984.  Williams believes that Vanessa is going to be fine.

She told press, “She’s got talent and she’s professional, and those are the things that’ll help her survive in life.  You know, welcome to the lesson of hard knocks. She got her first big one right now. I met her and she’s a very sweet, talented girl and I’ve seen ‘High School Musical 2’ a zillion times because of my kids … and she’ll be fine.”
