Bruno Tricks Israeli Spy and Palestinian Academic

Sacha Baron Cohen strikes yet again. For his upcoming Borat follow-up Bruno, Cohen tricked Yossi Alpher, a former Israeli spy and Palestinian academic Ghassam Khalib into appearing in the film under the guise that it was a youth documentary. The Sun reports that Bruno mistook the militant Arab group Hamas for the food “hummus”, and commented that the Middle East conflict wasn’t nearly as bad as the feud between Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston.

“What’s the connection between a political movement and food. Why hummus?” Cohen asked, later adding: “Yesterday I threw away my pitta bread because it was dripping hummus. And it’s too high in carbohydrates.”

Cohen also made them hold hands while he sang a “crazy song about the war.” Thanks to reader Luke H for the tip. Bruno is scheduled to hit theaters on May 15th 2009. I smell a Cannes premiere.

Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy: Too Close?

Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy: Too Close?

It’s always cute to see a girl sporting her man’s clothes, but the reverse situation can be a little creepy, as evidenced by Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy’s switch-up yesterday.

The “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” funnyman and his longtime blonde babe girlfriend were spotted strolling along the Malibu beach on the Fourth of July looking very much in love.

But when they returned to their beach house, things went awry, as Carrey re-emerged with a very noticeable change in ensemble, reminiscent of Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Borat” character.

The paparazzi and beach goers alike laughed hysterically at the comedian’s antics, making yesterday’s Independence Day holiday one to remember.

Sacha Baron Cohen, Will Ferrell to Star in Judd Apatow’s Sherlock Holmes

Sacha Baron Cohen will play Holmes, and Will Ferrell, Watson, in a comedic take on Sherlock Holmes for super-producer Judd Apatow. To avoid confusion, last month we reported on Guy Ritchie’s forthcoming, unrelated “Bond-like” take of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic English sleuth for Warner Bros.

No director is attached, and the flick, which see the two comedic stars re-teaming for the second time after their smash, Talladega Nights, is untitled at this time. Etan Cohen (Idiocracy, Tropic Thunder, no relation to Sacha) is writing the script for Columbia Pictures.

If it were not for the involvement of Judd Apatow and Etan Cohen, I could easily see this project wandering off into the realm of broad family comedy and “hang glider hi-jinks.” Talladega Nights, which Apatow produced, has its “low brow” and “class-ist” detractors, but there is some really smart, subversive comedy and writing therein. Also, Walker Texas Ranger. It’s tied with Stranger Than Fiction as my favorite Will Ferrell film thus far, and if Ferrell and Cohen can once again match or top their performances, their Sherlock Holmes could conjure Mel Brooks’s Young Frankenstein…or Beavis and Butt-Head. All counts of “Apatow-fatigue” aside, we’re looking forward to this one either way.

Sacha Baron Cohen To Play Sherlock Holmes

Sacha Baron Cohen, creator of Ali G and Borat, will play Sherlock Holmes according to Variety. Friend and fellow funny man Will Ferrell will play his crime-solving partner Dr Watson. The movie will be a comedy (obviously) and has nothing to do with the Sherlock Holmes movie Guy Ritchie is working on. Producer Matt Tolmach says:

“Sacha and Will are two of the funniest and most talented guys on the planet, and having them take on these two iconic characters is frankly hilarious.”

The pair worked together on Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby which did rather well. However Ferrell’s most recent movie, Semi-Pro, didn’t do that great at the box office which could suggest people are tired of Will Ferrell playing Will Ferrell just with a different setting. Hopefully this Sherlock Holmes movie will require him to act a little, rather just play his loud and obnoxious self.
