Brought To You By …
Let’s do a little “Whatever happened to…”
Commercials can be a really strong jump start for memories and nostalgia. In fact, I think they can sometimes trigger a certain feeling in us even more than TV shows because they were repeated 700 times when we kids and we remember them strongly, even though we don’t see them any longer.
After the jump we catch up with three classic commercial icons from the 80s. One famous for swinging a hammer, one famous for getting confronted by his dad, and one famous for fishing.
First off, listen to these two cover songs by a man named Reid Maclean.
Fantastic, right? You’re probably wondering who the heck this guy is and where you can buy his albums. You might know him from this spot in the 80s:
Yup, Reid is the “I learned it by watching you!” kid. He’s in his 30s now and an accomplished musician. Here’s his site, where you can find out about his album Bright Fading Star and listen to a few tracks. “Full Time Job” and “Ne’er Do Well” are really beautiful and have become two of my current favorites.
Here’s a classic ad, probably the most famous computer commercial of all-time. It ran only a couple of times, once during the Super Bowl:
The woman swinging the large hammer is Anya Major, who was a discus thrower and one of the few people who could actually swing that thing. She went on to play “Nikita” in the video for the Elton John song and also released her own album. She lives in England.
And how about the famous Oscar Mayer “Fisherman” commercial?
His name is Andy Lambros and he was four when he made that commercial. He’s owned several businesses since then and is also a musician. Here’s his site, though it looks like it hasn’t been updated in a while.
Fox sets House for post Super Bowl slot
With the last Super Bowl, CBS wavered back and forth for a long time over just which show to air in the coveted slot before finally settling on Criminal Minds. Fox is trying to avoid all the speculation and hand-wringing by announcing already that their hit medical drama will get the nod.
It’s a safe choice, but I’m not sure it’s the smartest one. Is there really anything to be gained by putting House there? It’s already the number one scripted show on television. That post Super Bowl boost might be put to better use giving it to a new show, or one that is still growing. My pick would be Bones. This season saw its ratings grow to the point that it is on the verge of being a top 20 show. The added exposure could push it over the top.
There is one caveat with that idea though. If the slot were to go to Bones, they would have to be sure to not make the same mistake that Criminal Minds did. Their post Super Bowl episode was far too dark and gorey. Bones certainly has the occasional cringe inducing moment, but they also have a good sense of fun when they go for the laugh. Given enough lead time, they could make the perfect showcase episode for the spot. Really though, as long as it isn’t Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader, I’m ok with it either way.
Paris Hilton Kicks Off Super Bowl Parties
Paris Hilton Kicks Off Super Bowl Parties
With the stars descending upon the desert in preparation of the big game, Paris Hilton kicked off four days of celebrity-filled Super Bowl parties last night in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The hotel heiress was hosting 944 Magazine’s 6th Anniversary Party, attended by guests ranging from Terrell Owens and Dennis Rodman to Sanjaya Malakar and Brody Jenner.
According to press on the scene, “Hilton strutted her stuff in front of the ever-obliging paparazzi as part of the sprawling 944 Super Village, a blocks-long entertainment complex sponsored by the Phoenix entertainment magazine.”
Besides Hilton’s festivities, clubgoers were also treated to a 50 Cent and Vitaminergy hosted Naked Ping Pong Celebrity tournament just down the street!
Gisele Bundchen Keeps Quiet About Big Game
Gisele Bundchen Keeps Quiet About Big Game
It’s Super Bowl weekend, and that means that football fans all over the world are getting ready for the big game tomorrow. And while Tom Brady is busy getting psyched up and ready to win, his girlfriend Gisele Bundchen is staying out of his hair.
The Brazilian supermodel was spotted at the Rag and Bone fashion show at New York City’s Cipriani restaurant yesterday. And when it came to commenting on her boy’s big upcoming game, she kept her lips sealed.
Maybe it’s because of Jessica Simpson’s drama surrounding her boyfriend Tony Romo’s poor performance as of late. The “With You” singer has been threatened by Dallas Cowboys fans for her supposed negative impact on her QB beau.
Or maybe Gisele is just superstitious. Nevertheless, when reporters started asking questions about the Super Bowl, she laughed and ran off.
