McCready Not McReady to Stay Out of Jail

Mindy McCready

Another familiar refrain for Mindy McCready.

The arrest-prone country songbird was busted in Tennessee Monday night after turning herself in for probation violation.

A spokesman for the Williamson County Sheriff’s Department told News the singer was held for just a few hours and released later that night.

The sheriff’s department issued a warrant for her arrest after it was discovered the singer was not making good on her order of community service.

McCready was released after posting bond and appeared in court to face the charge Tuesday morning, when her attorney filed a motion to reduce her number of public service hours.

She’s been down this road before.

McCready served five months in Williamson County Jail last year on a probation violation charge for falsifying a prescription. Upon her December release, she was sentenced to two more years of probation.

She’s due back in court July 8.

Katie Couric: The Tax Man Cometh

Katie Couric

Katie Couric’s charm isn’t winning over audiences on television and it certainly isn’t helping get the tax man off her back. He wants the CBS newswoman to pay her debt now.

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance has issued a warrant for Couric for an unpaid bill for $210.41 dating back to 2003.

Rep Matthew Hiltzik characterized the debt as a minor oversight, telling the New York Daily News that her bills were being sent to an old address. Couric’s on vacation, he added, and will settle the matter upon her return.

Considering she earns $15 million a year anchoring the CBS Evening News, it shouldn’t be a problem.

McCready’s McReady to Return to Studio

Mindy McCready

"Take Me Out to the Ballgame" probably won't make the track list, but Mindy McCready, with requisite personal drama in tow, is now ensconced in the studio to record new material.

She's stockpiled enough twangy tribulations to warrant a double album.

The country star is fresh off her disclosure that she did, in fact, have a decade-long affair with New York Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens back when she was just 15 years old.

"The first day was really difficult for her," manager John Dotson told the Associated Press. "She really has caught her breath."

As for what may have made her lose it in the first place, Dotson said: "This is Roger's situation to deal with and we've come back to work. We didn't go looking for this. They called us. We have a record to make and are in the middle of negotiating a deal on a reality show."

We're guessing it's not with ESPN.

Alfred Hitchcock on How the Introduction of Sound Hurt Cinema

Alfred HitchcockI just discovered this quote from master filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock, talking about how the introduction of sound and dialogue had in many ways hurt cinema:

“The silent pictures were the purest form of cinema; the only thing they lacked was the sound of people talking and the noises. But this slight imperfection did not warrant the major changs that sound brought in. In Many of the films now being made, there is very little cinema. They are mostly what I call ‘photographs of people talking.’ When we tell a story in cinema, we should resort to dialogue only when it’s impossible to do otherwise. I always try first to tell a story in the cinematic way, through a succession of shots and bits of film in between… To me, one of the cardinal sins for a scriptwriter, when he runs into some difficulty, is to say ‘We can cover that by a line of dialogue.’ Dialogue should simply be a sound among sounds, just something that comes out of the mouths of people whose eyes tell the story in visual terms.”
